Short-term adjunctive treatment for weight loss in exogenous obesity
This medication is used for patients with obesity who have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or more, or for those with a BMI of 27 or more who have other risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia and who do not respond to appropriate weight loss methods such as diet and exercise. This medication is prescribed to assist short-term weight loss therapy based on exercise, behavior modification, and calorie restriction. Additionally, it should be used alone and not in combination with other appetite suppressants for safety. Body mass index is calculated by dividing the patient's weight (kg) by the square of their height (m), and this value is used to assess the level of obesity. Therefore, this medication is effective for aiding weight loss in the treatment of obesity.
Adults: Administer 37.5 mg of phentermine hydrochloride orally once daily, before breakfast or 1–2 hours after breakfast. Use the lowest effective dose, adjusting it individually to achieve an adequate response. A dose of 18.75 mg once daily may be appropriate for some patients, while in some cases, taking 18.75 mg twice daily may be preferable. Avoid taking this medicine late at night because it may cause insomnia. This medicine should be administered for a short period (within 4 weeks). However, to reduce the risk of inappropriate use, treatment with this medicine may be continued if the patient achieves satisfactory weight loss within the first 4 weeks (weight loss of at least 1.8 kg, or weight loss considered satisfactory by both the physician and the patient).
This medication should not be used in combination with other appetite suppressants and should only be used alone for a short period. Combining this medication with other weight loss drugs is not recommended, as safety and efficacy are not assured. This medication may be associated with primary pulmonary hypertension, so symptoms such as dyspnea, chest pain, syncope, and leg swelling should be reported to a physician immediately. It may also be associated with heart valve disease, so caution is needed for long-term high-dose use or combinations with other appetite suppressants. Individuals with advanced atherosclerosis, cardiovascular disease, severe hypertension, pulmonary hypertension, hyperthyroidism, glaucoma, severe anxiety disorders, or a history of drug abuse should not take this medication. Furthermore, it should not be administered to children under the age of 16 or to pregnant or potentially pregnant women. Patients with diabetes or mild hypertension should exercise particular caution when using this medication, and diabetic patients may need to adjust their insulin dosage. This medication can affect the central nervous system and may cause side effects such as anxiety, insomnia, headache, and dizziness, so caution is needed when driving or operating dangerous machinery. In case of overdose, symptoms such as severe anxiety, coma, convulsions, abnormal blood pressure, and vomiting may occur, and appropriate treatment should be sought immediately. Using this medication with alcohol may worsen side effects, so it is advisable not to combine them. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should carefully consider the administration of this medication, as it may pose risks to the fetus or infant, and proceed based on consultation with a physician. This medication is classified as a controlled substance and has potential for dependence and abuse, so it should be taken exactly as directed by a physician. Abrupt cessation during use may cause fatigue or depression, so follow a physician's guidance when discontinuing use. It should be kept in a safe place out of reach of children.
