Improvement of postprandial hyperglycemia in diabetes mellitus
This medication is used for patients with diabetes who have difficulty controlling post-meal blood sugar levels despite following dietary and exercise regimens. It is also administered as an additional treatment for patients who are already on oral hypoglycemics or insulin therapy when blood sugar improvement is insufficient, effectively managing postprandial hyperglycemia. This helps to stabilize blood sugar levels and aids in the prevention of complications related to diabetes.
The response and tolerability vary among patients, so the physician must determine the dose according to the patient's condition. The usual dosage is as follows. Adults are generally administered voglibose 0.2mg per dose orally 3 times daily before each meal. If the effect is insufficient, the dose per administration may be increased to 0.3mg while carefully monitoring the patient's progress.
This medication should not be used in patients with severe conditions such as severe ketoacidosis or diabetic coma. It is also advisable not to administer this drug to patients with severe infections or those undergoing surgery, or to patients who have sustained severe trauma. Patients with allergies to any component of this medication should avoid using it. This medication contains lactose; therefore, it should not be administered to patients with lactose intolerance or galactose metabolism disorders. Patients with gastrointestinal issues or chronic intestinal diseases should use this medication cautiously as symptoms may worsen. Patients experiencing increased intestinal gas may need to be monitored closely, particularly those with a history of abdominal surgery or conditions like bowel obstruction or colonic stricture. Caution is required when administering this drug to patients with severely impaired liver or kidney function as drug metabolism may be affected. Older adults may have reduced bodily functions; therefore, treatment should start at a lower dose, with careful monitoring of their condition. When used in conjunction with other hypoglycemic agents, there is a risk of hypoglycemia; hence, treatment should begin at a lower dose while closely observing symptoms. If hypoglycemic symptoms occur during use, administering glucose instead of sugar is effective; in severe cases, proper treatment should be sought in a medical facility. Symptoms such as abdominal distension, increased flatulence, and, rarely, bowel obstruction may occur; drug use should be discontinued immediately if symptoms worsen. If symptoms of liver dysfunction or jaundice arise, use should be stopped immediately and consultation with healthcare providers is necessary. In patients with liver cirrhosis, constipation can lead to elevated ammonia levels and altered mental status, so bowel habits should be monitored carefully. Gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting may occur, as well as allergic reactions such as skin rash or itching. Neurological symptoms, including headaches, dizziness, and drowsiness, can occur; hence caution is needed when driving or operating machinery. Blood abnormalities such as anemia or thrombocytopenia have also been reported, so any unusual symptoms should be reported to healthcare providers. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should only use this medication if absolutely necessary due to uncertain safety. It is advisable for breastfeeding women to avoid using this medication if possible. The safety of this medication in pediatric patients has not been established, so its use is not recommended. Older adults may have declining physiological functions, hence treatment should begin at a lower dose, with careful monitoring of blood sugar and gastrointestinal symptoms. Regular blood sugar checks and monitoring of therapeutic effects and side effects should be conducted during the use of this medication. Additionally, patients should inform healthcare providers of any other medications they are taking that may affect blood sugar control.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
