View approved original text

This medication is used for the treatment of adult patients with type 2 diabetes whose blood sugar control is not sufficient by diet and exercise alone, particularly in those who are overweight. It can be used alone or in combination with other oral hypoglycemic agents or insulin to effectively control blood sugar. Precautions

This medication can rarely cause severe lactic acidosis which can be life-threatening, so patients should be cautious of symptoms of lactic acidosis while taking this medication. In addition, hypoglycemia may occur when taken in conjunction with insulin or sulfonylurea medications, so blood sugar levels should be closely monitored. Patients with moderate to severe renal impairment, dehydration, severe infections, or acute illnesses affecting renal function such as acute myocardial infarction should not use this medication. Patients with acute and unstable heart failure should also avoid taking this medication, and it should be discontinued for a certain period before and after examinations using iodinated contrast media. Patients who are allergic to this medication or to biguanides, patients with type 1 diabetes, and those with a history of lactic acidosis or diabetic ketoacidosis should also avoid its use. Patients with severe infections, trauma, pre- and post-surgery, malnutrition, hepatic impairment, severe respiratory failure, and those who consume excessive alcohol should also suspend or use this medication with caution. While taking this medication, gastrointestinal disorders, taste disturbances, and vitamin B12 deficiency may occur, so patients should consult a doctor if symptoms are severe. Renal function should be monitored regularly to ensure the safe use of this medication, and particular caution is needed for elderly patients or those with reduced renal function. Hypoglycemia may occur, so blood sugar levels should be carefully managed in situations of irregular meals, vigorous exercise, or in combination with other hypoglycemic agents. Alcohol consumption can increase the risk of lactic acidosis, so it is advisable not to indulge in excessive drinking while taking this medication. Patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding should consult a physician before taking this medication, as it may affect the fetus and newborn. This medication is not recommended for children, and elderly patients may need appropriate dosage adjustments based on renal function. In case of overdose, hypoglycemia is rare, but there is a risk of lactic acidosis, and immediate medical attention should be sought for appropriate treatment. This medication may interact with other drugs, so patients should inform healthcare providers of any medications they are taking, and should consult immediately if there are changes in blood sugar levels or abnormal symptoms. Finally, this medication should be swallowed whole, and it is normal for the tablet coating to be excreted, so there is no need for concern.
