Treatment of herpes zoster and herpes simplex; suppression of herpes simplex and treatment and prevention of recurrence of genital herpes
This medication is used to treat herpes zoster virus infections, genital herpes infections, and herpes simplex virus infections. It is especially helpful in patients with impaired immune function to effectively suppress herpes zoster and herpes simplex infections. It is also used to prevent recurrences of genital herpes. The cream form is suitable for treating cold sores, and the tablets can be adjusted in various dosages for treating herpes zoster infections. This medication helps improve symptoms caused by viral infections and increases treatment effectiveness.
1. Treatment of herpes zoster Adults: Administer 250 mg of famciclovir orally 3 times daily for 7 days. It is preferable to start treatment as soon as symptoms appear after infection. 2. Treatment of initial genital herpes infection Adults: Administer 250 mg of this medicine orally 3 times daily for 5 days. It is preferable to start treatment as soon as symptoms appear after infection. 3. Treatment of acute recurrent genital herpes infection Adults: Administer 125 mg of this medicine orally twice daily for 5 days. It is preferable to start treatment during the prodromal phase or as soon as symptoms appear after infection. 4. Suppression of recurrent genital herpes Adults: Administer 250 mg of this medicine orally twice daily. Discontinue treatment periodically every 6~12 months to observe whether the natural course of the disease has changed. 5. Patients with renal impairment: Because the clearance of this medicine is reduced in patients with renal impairment, dose adjustment should be made with caution. The dosage and administration for these patients are as follows. 1) Treatment of herpes zoster and initial genital herpes infection: Creatinine clearance (mL/min/1.73㎡) 30~59: 250 mg per dose, twice daily 10~29: 250 mg per dose, once daily 2) Treatment of acute recurrent genital herpes infection: Creatinine clearance (mL/min/1.73㎡) 30~59: 125 mg per dose, twice daily 10~29: 125 mg per dose, once daily 3) Suppression of recurrent genital herpes infection: Creatinine clearance (mL/min/1.73㎡) 30~59: 250 mg per dose, twice daily 10~29: 125 mg per dose, twice daily 4) If only serum creatinine is known, creatinine clearance may be calculated using the following formula. Men: {weight (kg) × (140-age)}/ {72 × serum creatinine (mg/dL)} Women: 0.85 × the value calculated for men 5) Patients with renal impairment undergoing hemodialysis For patients undergoing hemodialysis, administration every 48 hours, taking the dialysis interval into account, is preferable. Four hours of hemodialysis reduces the plasma concentration of this medicine by approximately 75%; therefore, administer this medicine immediately after dialysis. The recommended dose is 250mg for patients with herpes zoster and 125mg for patients with genital herpes. 6. Patients with hepatic impairment: No dose adjustment is necessary in patients with chronic compensated liver disease. There is insufficient treatment experience in patients with overt chronic decompensated liver disease; therefore, no clear recommended dose has been established.
This medication should not be used in patients with an allergy to this medication or its ingredients, or who have had hypersensitivity reactions to penciclovir. It contains lactose, so it should not be administered to patients with a genetic inability to break down lactose. Patients with impaired kidney function should use this medication with caution, and dose adjustments may be necessary. During treatment, symptoms such as headache, nausea, dizziness, and drowsiness may occur; caution should be exercised if symptoms are severe. If severe skin rashes or allergic reactions occur, consult a healthcare professional immediately. This medication does not completely cure genital herpes, so it is important to avoid sexual contact and maintain safe sexual practices during treatment. If dizziness or drowsiness occurs, avoid driving or operating machinery. Generally, older adults do not require dose adjustments, but if renal function is impaired, dosages should be adjusted. In cases of overdose, appropriate treatment is required, and blood dialysis may reduce drug concentration. This medication should be stored in a tightly closed container to protect it from air and moisture, in a dry place at a temperature below 30 degrees Celsius, and out of reach of children. Avoid transferring to another container, as it may adversely affect the quality of the medication.
