This medication improves atherosclerotic symptoms in adult patients with ischemic stroke, myocardial infarction, or peripheral artery disease. It is also used in patients with acute coronary syndrome for the improvement of symptoms such as cardiovascular-related death, myocardial infarction, and stroke. Particularly, in patients with atrial fibrillation who have vascular risk factors, are unsuitable for vitamin K antagonist treatment, and have low bleeding risks, it helps reduce the risks of stroke and thromboembolism. Overall, this medication is effective for the improvement and prevention of various cardiovascular diseases.

How to take

Adult dose

For patients with ischemic stroke, myocardial infarction, or peripheral arterial disease, administer clopidogrel 75 mg orally once daily. For patients with acute coronary syndrome (unstable angina or non-Q-wave myocardial infarction), initiate treatment with a loading dose of 300 mg of this drug once daily on the day treatment is started, followed by a maintenance dose of 75 mg orally once daily. Aspirin 75 ~ 325 mg should be administered concomitantly with this drug once daily. For patients with atrial fibrillation, administer 75 mg of this drug orally once daily. Aspirin 75 ~ 100 mg should be administered concomitantly with this drug once daily.

Precautions

This medication is an agent that prevents blood clots and thrombus formation. The efficacy of this medication may be reduced in individuals with a genetic deficiency of a specific enzyme (CYP2C19), in which case alternative treatment options should be considered. Additionally, concurrent use with medications that activate specific enzymes can result in elevated drug concentrations, increasing the risk of bleeding, and should be avoided. Patients with hypersensitivity reactions to this medication, any bleeding conditions, severe liver dysfunction, nursing mothers, and individuals with genetic disorders that affect lactose digestion should not use this medication. Patients at high risk of bleeding, those with poor liver or kidney function, recent stroke patients, hypertension patients, the elderly, and underweight patients should use this medication with caution. It is particularly important for patients scheduled for surgery to stop this medication 5 to 7 days prior to surgery to reduce the risk of bleeding. This medication can cause bleeding, so if symptoms of bleeding or abnormalities in blood tests occur, you should consult a doctor immediately. Care should be taken when taking this medication with drugs that increase bleeding risks, such as aspirin, warfarin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. During pregnancy, it should be used cautiously unless treatment for cardiovascular disease is necessary, and consideration should be given to the possibility of the drug being excreted in breast milk during nursing. It is not to be used in children as safety and efficacy have not been established. The elderly may have an increased risk of bleeding due to decreased bodily functions, thus requiring dosage adjustments and careful monitoring. Overdosage may increase bleeding risks, which can be treated with platelet transfusions, if necessary. This medication should be kept out of reach of children and stored in its original container for safety.
