Efficacy & effects

Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes

View approved original text

This medication is used in conjunction with diet and exercise therapy to help control blood sugar in patients with type 2 diabetes. It can be used alone, but when blood sugar control is insufficient, it can be combined with other hypoglycemic agents or insulin to enhance therapeutic effect. For instance, when sulfonylureas or metformin used alone are ineffective, this medication can be used in combination to better stabilize blood sugar levels. This allows for improved blood sugar management tailored to each patient's condition through various administration methods.

How to take

Adult dose

Adjusted individually for each patient. Swallow without chewing with more than 1/2 cup of water. Administer orally once daily. Take before breakfast or immediately before the first meal. Start with a dosage of 1 mg as glymepiride once a day. If necessary, increase the dosage by 1 mg every 1-2 weeks. Generally, additional effects are minimal when doses above 4 mg are administered.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients with insulin-dependent diabetes or those in diabetic ketoacidosis or coma. Patients who have had an allergic reaction to this medication, its ingredients, or sulfonylureas should not take it. There is no experience in using this medication in patients with severely impaired liver or kidney function, hence switching to insulin therapy is recommended in such cases. It is advisable not to administer this medication to women who are pregnant or likely to become pregnant, as well as those who are breastfeeding. Patients with severe infections, preoperative or postoperative states, or severe trauma should ideally receive insulin therapy, and those with gastrointestinal disorders may be at risk of hypoglycemia due to food absorption issues and should be cautious. During the first week of initial dosing, the risk of hypoglycemia is high, and blood sugar should be closely monitored. Older adults, those with poor nutritional status, patients with irregular eating patterns, alcohol users, and patients with decreased liver or kidney function should be given this medication with increased caution. This medication has a strong effect in lowering blood sugar, so patients should be attentive to symptoms of hypoglycemia, which may include headache, severe hunger, nausea, fatigue, confusion, drowsiness, and loss of consciousness. If hypoglycemia occurs, sugar-containing foods should be consumed immediately, and it is advisable to carry sugar at all times. Occasionally, blurred vision, digestive disturbances, liver function anomalies, decreased blood cell counts, and allergic reactions may occur; if symptoms arise, consult a doctor immediately. Regular meals and exercise should be maintained while taking this medication, and blood sugar control should be continuously monitored. When combining with other medications, interactions may occur, so all medications being taken should be reported to a physician or pharmacist. Particularly when taken with beta-blockers, antibiotics, anticoagulants, corticosteroids, etc., blood sugar changes should be closely monitored. If pregnant or breastfeeding, it is recommended to use insulin therapy instead of this medication, and breastfeeding may need to be discontinued if necessary. In cases of overdose, severe hypoglycemia may occur, necessitating immediate hospital treatment. The safety and efficacy of this medication have not been established in children, and dosage adjustments should be made in elderly patients considering their kidney function. Finally, this medication should be stored out of reach of children and kept in its original container for safety.
