Short-term adjunctive treatment for weight reduction in exogenous obesity
This medication is used as a short-term adjunct therapy in patients with exogenous obesity who have a Body Mass Index (BMI) greater than 30 or a BMI greater than 27 with other risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, or hyperlipidemia, who do not respond to appropriate dietary and exercise regimens. This medication helps in weight management when added to a weight loss regimen based on exercise, behavioral modification, and calorie restriction. It is important to use it alone without combining it with other appetite suppressants. This can help reduce health risks associated with obesity and aid in effective weight management. This drug is actively used in the treatment of obesity.
Adults: Administer 37.5 mg of phentermine hydrochloride orally once daily, before breakfast or 1–2 hours after breakfast. Use the minimum effective dose, adjusting the dose individually to achieve an adequate response. For some patients, 18.75 mg once daily may be appropriate, while in some cases it may be preferable to take 18.75 mg twice daily. Avoid taking this medicine late at night because it may cause insomnia. This medicine should be administered for a short period (within 4 weeks). However, to reduce the risk of inappropriate use of this medicine, treatment may be continued if the patient achieves satisfactory weight loss within the first 4 weeks (weight loss of at least 1.8 kg, or weight loss considered satisfactory by both the physician and the patient).
This medication should not be used in conjunction with other appetite suppressants and should only be used alone for a short duration. When combined with other medications for weight loss, safety and efficacy have not been established and are not recommended. If symptoms such as shortness of breath, angina, syncope, or lower limb edema occur, the physician should be notified immediately, and use should be discontinued. Long-term high-dose use or concurrent use with other appetite suppressants should be avoided as it may be associated with heart valve disease. Patients with cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, hyperthyroidism, glaucoma, anxiety disorders, and a history of drug abuse should not take this medication. It should also be avoided in pregnant women or women who may become pregnant, children under 16 years of age, and patients with certain genetic metabolic disorders. Diabetic patients should be cautious as insulin dosage adjustments may be necessary, and mild hypertensive patients should also be careful. In case of overdose, severe symptoms such as anxiety, coma, seizures, cardiac irregularities, and vomiting may occur, and immediate medical assistance should be sought. This drug may affect the central nervous system, so caution is required when driving or operating hazardous machinery. Alcohol should be avoided as it may cause harmful interactions. It should be stored in a safe place out of reach of children, and since it has potential for dependence and abuse, it should be taken strictly according to the physician's instructions.
