Short-term adjunctive treatment for weight loss in exogenous obesity
This medication is used for initial obesity patients who do not respond to appropriate dietary and exercise therapies. It is particularly applicable to exogenous obesity patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 kg/m2 or higher, or those with a BMI of 27 kg/m2 or higher who have risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, or hyperlipidemia. This medication serves to assist weight loss therapy composed of exercise, behavioral modification, and calorie restriction over a short duration. It should be used alone without combining with other appetite suppressants to ensure safety and effectiveness. Therefore, it is utilized as an important adjunct therapy in obesity management.
Adults: Administer 37.5 mg of phentermine hydrochloride orally once daily, before breakfast or 1 ~ 2 hours after breakfast. Use the lowest effective dose, adjusting the dose individually to achieve an adequate response. A dose of 18.75 mg once daily may be appropriate for some patients, while in some cases it may be preferable to take 18.75 mg twice daily. Avoid taking this medicine late at night because it may cause insomnia. This medicine should be administered for a short term (within 4 weeks). However, to reduce the risk of inappropriate use, treatment may be continued if the patient achieves satisfactory weight loss within the first 4 weeks (at least 1.8 kg of weight loss, or weight loss considered satisfactory by both the physician and patient).
This medication should not be used in conjunction with other appetite suppressants and must be taken alone for a short duration only. During treatment, if symptoms such as shortness of breath, angina, syncope, or lower extremity edema occur, consult a doctor immediately. There may be risks associated with heart valve disease or pulmonary arterial hypertension, so caution is required. Patients with certain conditions such as advanced atherosclerosis, cardiovascular diseases, severe hypertension, or hyperthyroidism should avoid using this medication. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, children under the age of 16, and patients with certain genetic disorders should not take this medication. Patients with diabetes or mild hypertension should consult a doctor before taking this medication and administer it with caution. This medication may cause various side effects including palpitations, anxiety, headache, dry mouth, constipation, and others. It is important to start with the minimum dose when taking this medication for the first time to avoid overdose. Patients with diabetes may require insulin dose adjustments while taking this medication. The use of this medication is not recommended for individuals who have used other appetite suppressants in the past year. Sudden cessation of this medication may cause severe fatigue and depression, so care should be taken. Care should be taken when performing hazardous activities such as operating machinery or driving due to the central nervous system effects of this medication. This medication may reduce the effectiveness of certain antihypertensive drugs, and harmful interactions may occur if taken with alcohol. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should carefully consider the risks and benefits of using this medication. In case of overdose, severe symptoms such as anxiety, coma, seizures, abnormal blood pressure, and vomiting may occur, requiring immediate emergency treatment. This medication should be kept out of reach of children and is designated as a controlled substance, requiring caution against abuse and dependence. Long-term high-dose use may result in serious side effects such as mental abnormalities, insomnia, and irritability.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This medication should be stored in a tightly closed container to prevent exposure to air or moisture, and it is safest to keep it at room temperature between 1 and 30 degrees Celsius. Storing it this way maintains the medication's effectiveness and safety.
