Efficacy & effects

Improvement in blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes

  • Blood sugar control impairment in patients with type 2 diabetes
View approved original text

This medication is used to help control blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. It can be administered alone or in combination therapy when blood sugar is not adequately controlled alongside diet and exercise. For example, it can be used with insulin if oral antihyperglycemic medications alone are insufficient. Additionally, in cases where sufficient blood sugar control is not achievable with sulfonylurea drugs or metformin monotherapy, it can be combined with metformin to enhance blood sugar control. These treatment methods effectively aid in the management of patients' blood sugar levels.

How to take

Adult dose

Doses are adjusted individually for each patient. This medication is taken orally once a day, before breakfast or just before the first meal. The initial dose is started at 1 mg and can be increased by 1 mg at 1 to 2-week intervals. Generally, there is little additional effect above a dose of 4 mg, but it can be increased up to a maximum of 6 to 8 mg. If a daily dose of 4 mg fails, insulin therapy conversion should be considered.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients with insulin-dependent diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, or in a comatose state. It should also not be administered to patients who are allergic to this drug or its components, or who have severe liver or kidney dysfunction. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should refrain from taking this medication, and insulin therapy is recommended for patients with severe infections or those undergoing surgery or with severe trauma. Patients with gastrointestinal disorders may have issues with food absorption, leading to a risk of hypoglycemia, so care must be taken. Additionally, this medication is not suitable for patients with genetic lactose intolerance. During the first week of treatment, the risk of hypoglycemia is high, so blood sugar levels should be checked frequently, especially in elderly patients, those with malnutrition, irregular meals, alcohol consumers, and patients with weakened kidney or liver function. Careful management is also required in cases where there are other endocrine disorders, excessive use of medications, or when taking other medications that may interact with this drug. This medication contains the dye Yellow No. 4, so individuals allergic to this component should be cautious. Hypoglycemia could occur while taking this medication, with symptoms including headaches, severe hunger, nausea, fatigue, anxiety, confusion, drowsiness, and in severe cases, coma. Visual disturbances or gastrointestinal symptoms, liver function abnormalities, blood anomalies, and allergic reactions may occur, so any abnormal symptoms should prompt immediate consultation with a doctor. Severe hypoglycemia or serious allergic reactions can be life-threatening; therefore, urgent measures are necessary. It is crucial to take this medication regularly and to adhere to diet and exercise regimens. If symptoms of hypoglycemia appear, immediate intake of sugars is necessary, and it is advisable to always have preparations for sugar intake ready at hand. Furthermore, during stressful situations or surgery, infections, etc., blood sugar control may become difficult and insulin therapy may be considered. When taking this medication with others, there is a potential for interactions hence patients should inform their doctors or pharmacists of any currently taken medications, especially when taking specific antibiotics, antifungals, beta-blockers, and corticosteroids. Pregnant or breastfeeding women are advised not to use this medication and should consider switching to insulin therapy if necessary. Safety and efficacy in children under 18 years have not been established, hence it is recommended not to use in this age group. Elderly patients may have reduced kidney function, necessitating caution in dose adjustments. In cases of overdose, the risk of hypoglycemia is significantly elevated, requiring immediate emergency treatment, and intravenous glucose may be required if necessary. This medication should be kept out of reach of children and should be stored in its original container to maintain the quality of the drug.
