Efficacy & effects

Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes

  • Abnormal blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes
View approved original text

This medication helps patients with type 2 diabetes improve their blood sugar control alongside dietary and exercise therapies. It can be used as monotherapy, and can also be combined with insulin when oral hypoglycemic agents do not achieve sufficient control. Additionally, for patients whose blood sugar cannot be controlled with sulfonylureas or metformin monotherapy, combining it with metformin can enhance blood sugar management. Overall, this medication is effectively used to improve blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes.

How to take

Adult dose

Adjust individually for each patient. Swallowed whole with more than 1/2 cup of water without chewing. Administered orally once daily, to be taken before breakfast or immediately before the first meal. For monotherapy, the initial dose is 1 mg of glimepiride taken once daily, with increases of 1 mg periodically every 1-2 weeks as needed. Generally, a maximum of 4 mg is administered, and in some cases, up to 6 mg may be required.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients with insulin-dependent diabetes or severe liver or kidney dysfunction. Additionally, it should not be taken by patients who have had allergic reactions to this medication or similar drugs, or by women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. In cases of severe infections or major surgery, or severe trauma, switching to insulin treatment is recommended. Care should be taken in cases of gastrointestinal disorders such as diarrhea or vomiting, as these can affect drug absorption. Patients with lactose intolerance or certain genetic metabolic disorders should not take this medication. During the first week of taking the medication, there is a high risk of hypoglycemia, so blood sugar levels must be closely monitored. The risk of hypoglycemia also increases in cases of poor nutritional status, irregular meals, excessive physical activity, or changes in eating patterns. Frequent alcohol consumption, decreased kidney and liver function, older age, and other endocrine disorders also require caution. If this medication has been overdosed or taken with other drugs, it may impact blood sugar control due to drug interactions, so it is essential to consult a physician. Symptoms of hypoglycemia can include headache, severe hunger, dizziness, confusion, drowsiness, and in severe cases, loss of consciousness, so it is crucial to recognize these symptoms and immediately consume sugar. Various side effects such as visual disturbances, dyspepsia, abnormal liver function, blood abnormalities, and allergic reactions may occur, and any abnormal symptoms should be discussed with healthcare providers immediately. The effectiveness of this medication is enhanced when taken regularly along with dietary and exercise therapies, and it is important to consume sugar immediately in cases of hypoglycemia. Women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, as well as those who are breastfeeding, are advised to consider insulin treatment instead of this medication. In cases of overdose, appropriate emergency measures such as inducing vomiting, gastric lavage, glucose injection, etc., are necessary, and monitoring is required for at least 24 to 48 hours to prevent recurrence of hypoglycemia. The safety and efficacy of this medication have not been established in children, and in elderly patients, dosage adjustments may be necessary considering renal function. Store the medication out of reach of children, keep it in its original container, and avoid transferring it to other containers.
