Improvement of blood sugar control in Type 2 diabetes
This medication is used to assist meal therapy and exercise therapy in order to improve blood sugar control in patients with Type 2 diabetes. It can be administered alone, and in cases where blood sugar control is insufficient with oral hypoglycemic agents, it may be used in combination with insulin. Additionally, when sulfonylureas or metformin monotherapy is insufficiently effective, it can be used in combination with metformin to aid in blood sugar control. This medication is used to effectively improve blood sugar management in patients.
Take by mouth once daily. This medication should be taken before breakfast or immediately before the first meal. The initial dose is 1 mg of glimepiride. If necessary, the dose may be increased by 1 mg at intervals of 1 to 2 weeks. Generally, doses above 4 mg show little additional effect, but may be increased up to 6 mg or 8 mg. If a daily dose of 4 mg fails, consider switching to insulin.
This medication should not be used in patients with insulin-dependent diabetes or in patients experiencing diabetic ketoacidosis or coma. Patients allergic to this medication or sulfonylureas should also avoid its use. Patients with severe liver or kidney impairment should not use this medication and it is recommended to switch to insulin treatment. Women who are pregnant, may become pregnant, or are breastfeeding should not take this medication. Patients with severe infections, pre- or post-surgery, or severe trauma may require insulin treatment, so caution should be taken when using this medication. In cases of gastrointestinal disturbances such as diarrhea or vomiting, there is a risk of hypoglycemia due to poor nutrient absorption, so caution is needed. In the first week of treatment, the risk of hypoglycemia is high, and blood sugar levels should be closely monitored, especially for elderly patients, those with malnutrition, inconsistent meals, and alcohol consumers. Patients with reduced renal or liver function or other endocrine disorders have an increased risk of hypoglycemia and should be treated with caution. This medication can cause hypoglycemia, so it is important to be aware of the symptoms of hypoglycemia and to carry sugar at all times. Symptoms of hypoglycemia may include headache, severe hunger, nausea, fatigue, confusion, drowsiness, decreased consciousness, etc., so immediate treatment should be sought in case of abnormal symptoms. Occasionally gastrointestinal symptoms such as blurred vision, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea may appear, so if these symptoms persist, consult a physician. This medication may cause liver dysfunction, blood disorders, or allergic reactions, so any abnormal symptoms should be reported to healthcare personnel immediately. In particular, if allergic symptoms such as hives, rash, or difficulty breathing occur, the medication should be discontinued immediately and medical assistance should be sought. When taking this medication, it is important to adhere to dietary and exercise recommendations and to regularly check blood sugar control status. Using this medication in conjunction with other drugs may affect blood sugar control, so all medications currently being taken should be communicated to healthcare personnel. It is safest to avoid this medication and switch to insulin treatment if pregnant or breastfeeding. In case of overdose, severe hypoglycemia may occur, requiring immediate emergency treatment, which may include inducing vomiting, administration of activated charcoal, or glucose injection. Keep the medication out of reach of children and store it in its original container. Elderly patients may have reduced kidney function, thus it is important to adjust the dosage and administer it carefully. The safety and efficacy of this medication in pediatric patients under 18 years have not been established, therefore its use should be avoided.
