This medicine is used for the treatment and prevention of herpes simplex virus infections in skin and mucosal tissues, including primary and recurrent genital herpes. It is also effective in treating herpes zoster virus infections, particularly aiding in pain relief during acute episodes. This medication is useful in alleviating various symptoms caused by viral infections.

Dosage and Administration

Adult dosage

For the treatment of herpes simplex virus infections, administer acyclovir 200 mg five times a day every 4 hours for 5 days. In cases of severe primary infections, treatment may be extended. For patients with severe immune deficiency or gastrointestinal absorption disorders, the single dose may be increased to 400 mg or the route may be changed to intravenous administration. For the prevention of herpes simplex infections in immunocompetent patients, administer 200 mg four times a day.

Children's dosage

For children over 2 years, the dosage follows that for adults. For children under 2 years, administer 1/2 of the adult dose. For the treatment of chickenpox in children over 2 years, administer 20 mg per kg of body weight in 4 divided doses per day for 5 days.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients with a history of allergic reactions to this medicine or its components. Patients with poor kidney function may be more prone to central nervous system side effects when using this medication, so caution is necessary. Patients with impaired liver function should use this medication with care due to the risk of worsening liver function. Children and elderly patients may experience side effects more frequently, so careful administration is required. Rarely, serious allergic reactions, including anaphylactic shock, may occur when using this medication, so symptoms should be closely monitored. If skin rash, fever, vesicles, or hives appear, use should be immediately discontinued and medical attention should be sought. Symptoms such as hair loss, severe dermatitis, and syndromes causing severe damage to skin and mucous membranes may also occur, so caution is needed. Changes in mental state, confusion, hallucinations, seizures, drowsiness, and anxiety may occur, particularly in elderly patients or those with reduced kidney function. Regular urine tests and kidney function tests should be performed as kidney problems can arise. Various side effects, including blood abnormalities, liver dysfunction, and gastrointestinal issues, may occur, so immediate consultation with healthcare professionals is required if symptoms arise. If symptoms do not improve or worsen, especially during treatment for herpes simplex, chickenpox, or herpes zoster, alternative treatment options should be considered. It is effective to administer this medication as soon as possible after symptoms begin, ideally within 5 days for herpes zoster and within 3 days for chickenpox. Patients with weakened immune systems may consider intravenous treatment. Adequate hydration during treatment is important to prevent dehydration and reduce the risk of kidney toxicity. Caution is required when driving or operating machinery as consciousness may be impaired, particularly in patients with reduced kidney function. Interactions may occur with other medications, so any concurrent medications should be reported to healthcare professionals. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should carefully consider this medication's potential effects on the fetus. During breastfeeding, this medication may be transmitted through breast milk, so discontinuation of breastfeeding during treatment is advisable. This medication should only be used minimally in children or neonates, as safety has not been established and there may be risks involved. Elderly patients may have heightened blood concentration due to reduced kidney function, so dosage and intervals should be adjusted and administered cautiously. Overdose may lead to kidney damage or central nervous system symptoms, so immediate medical attention should be sought if suspected. In case of overdose, treatments such as dialysis may be needed to lower blood concentrations of the drug. This medication has been reported to have the potential to cause genetic changes at high doses, but no significant issues are known at standard doses.
