This medication is used for the treatment of gastric and duodenal ulcers, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and gastroesophageal reflux disease. It is also used to prevent Mendelson's syndrome through pre-anesthetic administration and to treat postoperative gastric ulcers. It is effective for gastric and duodenal ulcers caused by the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It improves gastric mucosal lesions such as erosion, bleeding, redness, and swelling that occur during acute exacerbations of acute and chronic gastritis, and it also helps treat diseases related to upper gastrointestinal bleeding. Furthermore, it is used to relieve heartburn and acid reflux caused by excessive gastric acid. Overall, it acts effectively in treating gastrointestinal diseases and protecting the gastric mucosa.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to any component of this drug or a history of acute porphyria. Patients with impaired renal function may have increased blood concentration of this medication since it is excreted through the kidneys; therefore, the dosage should be reduced or the dosing interval extended. Patients with impaired liver function, a history of drug hypersensitivity, and elderly patients should also use it with caution. Patients taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs should be monitored regularly. This medication may mask symptoms of gastric cancer, so patients with gastric ulcers or middle-aged patients with new dyspeptic symptoms should verify malignancy before usage. Patients with gastric and duodenal ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori need concurrent therapy to eradicate the bacteria. Rarely, shock or allergic reactions, blood abnormalities, liver dysfunction, cardiac rhythm disturbances, gastrointestinal symptoms, and psychiatric symptoms may occur while taking this medication; if these symptoms arise, use should be discontinued immediately and a doctor consulted. Regular blood tests and liver and kidney function tests should be performed to confirm normality during treatment. The risk of pneumonia may be increased in the elderly, patients with chronic diseases, and those with weakened immune systems. If dizziness or drowsiness occurs after taking this medication, avoid driving or operating hazardous machinery. There may be interactions with other medications; careful monitoring of blood coagulation status is required, especially in patients taking anticoagulants like warfarin. When taking with drugs such as sucralfate, dosing should be spaced at least 2 hours apart as it may interfere with absorption. Women who are pregnant or potentially pregnant and nursing mothers should carefully weigh the benefits and risks before using this medication. Safety for use in children has not been adequately confirmed; caution is needed. Elderly patients may have increased medication concentrations due to decreased kidney function; therefore, dosage adjustment may be necessary. Some tests may yield false-positive results due to this medication, so care should be taken with testing methods. In case of overdose, gastric lavage or appropriate treatment is required, and in severe cases, blood dialysis may be needed. Store out of reach of children and do not transfer medication to other containers for safety.
