Reduction of cardiovascular disease risk and improvement of hyperlipidemia
This medication helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. It decreases the risk of death due to heart diseases and the risk of non-fatal myocardial infarction and stroke in adult patients with a history of vascular-related diseases such as coronary heart disease, diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, and stroke. Additionally, it lowers the risks associated with coronary and non-coronary vascular interventions. For patients with hyperlipidemia, it improves total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, Apo-B protein, and triglyceride levels while increasing HDL-cholesterol, and is used as an adjunct in the treatment of various types of dyslipidemia. In particular, it helps manage cholesterol levels in children with familial hypercholesterolemia or other risk factors when used in conjunction with dietary therapy. Therefore, this medication is used for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases and hyperlipidemia.
It is recommended to administer 5 to 40 mg once daily in the evening for this medication. The initial starting dose is 20 mg daily, and for patients at high risk for cardiovascular disease, 40 mg daily is administered. Dose adjustment is required for certain patient populations (the elderly, those with renal impairment, patients taking certain drugs), with a maximum dose of 80 mg daily.
For pediatric patients aged 10 to 17 years, administer 10 mg once daily in the evening, with a recommended dosage range of 10 to 40 mg daily, and a maximum of 40 mg daily. When adjusting the dosage, allow for intervals of at least 4 weeks.
This medication can cause muscle disorders such as myopathy or rhabdomyolysis, especially at high doses. Therefore, patients taking this medication at high doses should immediately consult a doctor if they experience muscle pain or weakness. Patients with an allergy to this medication, those with active liver disease, pregnant women or women of childbearing potential, and patients taking certain medications should not use this medication. Patients with impaired liver or kidney function, those with hypothyroidism, the elderly, and women should exercise additional caution when using this medication. This medication can affect liver function; therefore, regular liver function tests and blood tests are necessary, and if any symptoms of liver abnormalities appear, use should be discontinued immediately. As this medication interacts with other drugs, the risk of muscle damage may increase, especially when taken with certain antifungals, antibiotics, immunosuppressants, or some heart medications, so it is crucial to inform the doctor or pharmacist about all current medications. Grapefruit juice should be avoided as it may increase the blood concentration of this medication, raising the risk of side effects. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not take this medication, and women who are of childbearing age should ensure adequate contraception while taking it. Children and adolescents can only use this medication beyond a certain age, so they must follow a doctor's instructions. In case of overdose, seek medical attention immediately for appropriate treatment, and this medication should be kept out of the reach of children.
