Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes
This medication is used as a therapeutic agent to complement dietary and exercise therapy for the improvement of blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes. It can be administered alone and can also be used in combination with insulin or other oral hypoglycemic agents when blood sugar control is inadequate. In particular, it helps improve blood sugar control when monotherapy with sulfonylurea or metformin is ineffective. This medication effectively improves blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes.
Administer orally once daily. The initial dosage starts at 1 mg, and it can be increased by 1 mg at 1 to 2-week intervals. Generally, the maximum dosage is up to 4 mg, but may be increased to 6 mg or 8 mg if needed. This medication should be taken before breakfast or just before the first meal with more than 1/2 cup of water, without chewing. In combination therapy, when used with insulin, take 8 mg once daily with the first meal.
This medication is not to be used in patients with insulin-dependent diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, or those in a state of coma. Patients who have had allergic reactions to this medication or sulfonylureas, as well as those with severe liver or kidney dysfunction, should also avoid taking this medication. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, and nursing mothers should not use this medication. In cases of severe infections, before and after surgery, and for patients with major trauma, insulin treatment is recommended, and this medication should be avoided. In cases of gastrointestinal disorders such as diarrhea or vomiting, caution is required, as impaired food absorption may pose a risk of hypoglycemia. During the first week of taking this medication, the risk of hypoglycemia is high, so blood sugar levels should be monitored closely. Particularly, elderly patients, those with poor nutritional status or irregular eating habits, patients with weakened kidney or liver function, and those having other endocrine disorders should be extra careful. Additionally, individuals who frequently consume alcohol or take certain medications together might have an increased risk of hypoglycemia, so they should consult their healthcare provider. Symptoms of hypoglycemia may include headaches, severe hunger, nausea, fatigue, confusion, decreased consciousness, etc., and if such symptoms occur, immediate sugar intake or consultation with a healthcare provider is necessary. This medication may cause various side effects, including liver dysfunction, blood abnormalities, and allergic reactions; therefore, any unusual symptoms should be reported to a doctor immediately. When taking this medication for blood sugar control, dietary and exercise therapy should also be practiced, and it is important to take the medication regularly. If hypoglycemia occurs, consuming sugar or sugary drinks immediately is effective, while artificial sweeteners do not help. During treatment, patients should inform any doctors or pharmacists they meet of the current medications being taken and their diabetes status, and in stressful situations such as trauma, surgery, or infections, insulin treatment may need to be switched to. This medication is excreted through the kidneys, so dosage adjustment is necessary for elderly patients with weakened kidney function. In case of overdose, hypoglycemic shock may occur, so immediate medical attention is required.
