Improvement of Type 2 diabetes (blood sugar control)
This medication is used for patients with Type 2 diabetes whose blood sugar control is insufficient with diet and exercise alone, especially in overweight adults. It can also be used alone or in combination with other oral hypoglycemic agents or insulin in adult patients. It helps control blood sugar in children over 10 years of age and adolescents during growth when used alone or in combination with insulin. This drug effectively supports blood glucose management and plays an important role in the treatment of diabetes.
Dosage should be determined based on individual drug efficacy and tolerance Administer 500 mg with meals 2-3 times daily Increase the dosage gradually by 500 mg each week If prescribing up to 2000 mg, divide into two doses taken in the morning and evening If over 2000 mg, administer 3 times daily with meals Maximum dose: 2550 mg per day
Children over 10 years and adolescents during growth Standard initial dose: 500 mg once daily with or after meals Adjust dose after measuring blood sugar one week later Maximum daily dose: 2000 mg, 2-3 times
This medication can cause severe lactic acidosis or hypoglycemia, and extreme caution is required. It should not be used in patients with moderate to severe renal dysfunction, dehydration, severe infections, acute myocardial infarction, etc. In patients with acute heart failure or before and after diagnostic tests using iodine-based contrast agents, the administration of this drug should be stopped, and only resumed after renal function is confirmed to be normal. It should not be used in patients with hypersensitivity to this drug or in those with Type 1 diabetes, metabolic acidosis, etc. In cases of severe infection, major trauma, or before and after surgery, discontinuation of the medication is necessary temporarily, and it should be resumed after the patient’s condition is recovered. Patients with poor nutritional status or impaired liver function and those consuming excessive alcohol should use this medication with caution. During the treatment, irregular meals, vigorous exercise, and taking other interacting drugs may pose a risk for lactic acidosis and hypoglycemia, so careful management is required. Lactic acidosis is a rare but serious side effect; if symptoms such as fatigue, muscle pain, difficulty breathing, or abdominal pain occur, promptly inform healthcare personnel. Gastrointestinal disturbances are common but usually temporary, and symptoms may be reduced by taking the medication with meals or gradually increasing the dosage. This medication is excreted through the kidneys, so regular renal function tests should be conducted before and during treatment; the medication should be discontinued if renal function declines. Alcohol can increase the risk of side effects, so excessive drinking should be avoided during treatment. During pregnancy, the potential effects on the fetus must be carefully considered, and it is not to be used if there is a risk of placental dysfunction or preeclampsia. During breastfeeding, as this medication is secreted in breast milk, it is advised to consult a physician about the appropriate measures, whether to discontinue breastfeeding or the medication. Elderly patients may have a risk of declining renal function, so dosage adjustments and frequent checks of renal function are necessary. Caution is needed when taking it with other hypoglycemic agents or specific medications, as interactions may alter blood sugar control efficacy. In case of overdose, blood dialysis can remove the medication, so contact healthcare personnel immediately and receive appropriate treatment.
