Mucolysis and improved expectoration in acute and chronic respiratory diseases
This medication helps to dissolve mucus and expel phlegm in acute and chronic respiratory diseases. It helps soften sticky mucus in the bronchi, aiding in airway clearance. Thus, it facilitates the expulsion of phlegm during coughing, making breathing more comfortable. Due to these effects, it is suitable for use in acute and chronic respiratory diseases.
Adults: The usual dose is 300 mg of erdosteine orally 2–3 times daily. For acute respiratory conditions, do not administer continuously for more than 10 days.
This medication should not be used in the following patients: First, patients who are allergic to this medicine or any of its components should not take it. Second, patients with liver cirrhosis or cystathionine beta-synthase deficiency should avoid it, as its metabolites may interfere with methionine metabolism. Third, patients with peptic ulcers should not take this. Fourth, patients with severely impaired kidney function, specifically those with a creatinine clearance of less than 25 mL/min, should not use this medication. Fifth, patients with severely impaired liver function should also refrain from taking this medication. Sixth, since this medication contains lactose, patients with genetic issues such as galactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency, or glucose-galactose malabsorption should not take it. This medication should be used cautiously in the following patients: First, patients with mild or moderate liver dysfunction should take it with care, ensuring the dose does not exceed 300 mg per day. Second, patients allergic or hypersensitive to the included Yellow No. 5 dye should use it with caution. Overdose of this medication may result in symptoms such as sweating, dizziness, and flushing. Common side effects reported include headache, cold symptoms, difficulty breathing, altered taste, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, heartburn, skin rash, hives, erythema, and eczema. Additionally, symptoms such as fatigue, indigestion, palpitations, facial and generalized swelling, itching, weakness, and drowsiness may also occur. Care should be taken as using this medication with expectorants may make phlegm clearance difficult, thus increasing the risk of bronchial infection. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should avoid this medication due to uncertain safety.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
Consult a doctor or pharmacist if taken with cough medications.
