Reduction of cardiovascular disease risk and improvement of hyperlipidemia
This medication is effective at reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases. It decreases the risk of mortality from coronary artery disease, nonfatal myocardial infarction, and stroke in adult patients with a history of coronary artery disease, diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, or stroke, and also reduces the risk associated with vascular surgeries. Additionally, it lowers total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol levels and increases HDL-cholesterol levels in various forms of hyperlipidemia, improving blood lipid levels. It is particularly used as an adjunct to diet to help lower cholesterol levels in pediatric patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia. This medication is used for cardiovascular health and improving lipid abnormalities.
The recommended initial starting dose for adult patients with a high risk of coronary artery disease due to a history of coronary artery disease, diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, stroke, or other cerebrovascular diseases is 40 mg once daily. For general hyperlipidemia patients, the initial starting dose is 20 mg in the evening once a day. For patients with mild to moderate hypercholesterolemia, treatment can start at 10 mg. General dosage ranges
The recommended initial dose for pediatric patients (ages 10-17) with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia is 10 mg once daily in the evening. The recommended dose range is 10-40 mg per day, and the maximum recommended dose is 40 mg.
This medication is primarily used to lower cholesterol levels. While taking this medication, muscle issues may arise, particularly muscle pain or weakness, and in severe cases, rhabdomyolysis may occur. The risk of these muscle problems increases with higher doses, particularly at 80 mg per day. Additionally, taking this medication alongside certain interacting drugs may increase the risk of muscle damage, so consult a doctor if you are taking such drugs. This medication is primarily metabolized in the liver, so patients with poor liver function or liver disease should not take it, and regular liver function tests are important. Women who are pregnant, may become pregnant, or are breastfeeding should not take this medication. Furthermore, this medication contains lactose, so patients with lactose intolerance should avoid it. Elderly patients, those with alcohol dependence, patients with impaired kidney function, and patients with hypothyroidism should exercise greater caution when taking this medication, and any muscle-related symptoms should be reported to a doctor immediately. If unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness occurs while taking this medication, stop taking it immediately and consult a healthcare professional. It is advisable to avoid certain foods, such as grapefruit juice, while taking this medication, and to inform your doctor or pharmacist of any other medications you are taking due to the potential for interactions. This medication rarely causes side effects such as hepatitis, skin rashes, blood disorders, or neurological abnormalities, so report any unusual symptoms to a healthcare professional immediately. Finally, this medication may slightly increase the risk of diabetes, so individuals requiring blood sugar management should have regular testing.
