Treatment of mood disorders (depression and premenstrual dysphoric disorder), obsessive-compulsive disorder, and bulimia nervosa
This medication exhibits symptomatic improvement in depressed patients within 5 to 6 weeks, alleviating functional impairment in daily life. It also reduces binge eating and laxative symptoms in patients with bulimia nervosa, improving appetite-related issues. In obsessive-compulsive disorder, it decreases obsessions and compulsions, helping alleviate difficulties in social and work life. It helps alleviate not only symptoms of depression, anxiety, and emotional instability associated with premenstrual dysphoric disorder, but also physical symptoms. However, it should be noted that regular assessments of efficacy are necessary during long-term administration for all conditions. Overall, this medication is used for the improvement of symptoms of depression, bulimia nervosa, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder.
Adults 1. Depression 1) Initial treatment: The initial dose is 20mg of fluoxetine hydrochloride orally once daily in the morning. In controlled clinical trials, doses of 20~80mg daily were administered. If no improvement is observed, an increase in dose may be considered after several weeks. Doses exceeding 20mg daily should be administered twice daily (morning and noon), and the maximum dose of 80mg daily should not be exceeded. The onset of an adequate antidepressant effect may be delayed until 4 weeks or longer after the start of treatment. 2) Maintenance/continuation/extended treatment: There are no definitive data on how long patients should be treated with this drug, but psychopharmacologists recognize that acute symptoms of depression require drug treatment for several months or longer. It is not known whether the amount of antidepressant needed to relieve symptoms is the same as that needed to maintain or sustain remission. 2. Bulimia nervosa Administer 60mg of this drug daily. Do not exceed 80mg daily. Measure electrolyte levels before starting treatment. 3. Obsessive-compulsive disorder Administer 20~60mg of this drug daily. Do not exceed 80mg daily. 4. Premenstrual dysphoric disorder Administer 20mg of this drug daily. Reassess whether continued treatment is needed after 6 months of treatment. Patients with renal and/or hepatic impairment, patients receiving multiple medications, elderly patients, and patients with comorbid conditions: Administer a low dose or reduce the frequency of administration. Adjust the dose as appropriate according to age and symptoms. Switching from MAO inhibitors used to treat psychiatric disorders Allow an interval of at least 14 days after discontinuing an MAO inhibitor used to treat psychiatric disorders before starting treatment with this drug. Conversely, allow at least 5 weeks after discontinuing this drug before starting an MAO inhibitor to treat psychiatric disorders. Other MAO inhibitors such as linezolid or methylene blue Patients receiving linezolid or intravenous methylene blue should not start treatment with this drug because of the increased risk of serotonin syndrome. For patients requiring more urgent treatment of a psychiatric condition, including hospitalization and other interventions, treatment should be considered. It may be necessary to urgently administer linezolid or intravenous methylene blue to a patient already receiving this drug. If there is no alternative to linezolid or intravenous methylene blue and, for a particular patient, the benefits of treatment with linezolid or intravenous methylene blue are judged to outweigh the risk of serotonin syndrome, discontinue this drug immediately and administer linezolid or intravenous methylene blue. Monitor the patient for symptoms of serotonin syndrome for 5 weeks after administration of linezolid or intravenous methylene blue, or until 24 hours after the last dose, whichever comes first. Treatment with this drug may be restarted 24 hours after the last dose of linezolid or intravenous methylene blue. The risk associated with administration of methylene blue by non-intravenous routes (oral tablets or local injection), or intravenous administration of this drug at a dose of 1mg/kg or less, is unclear. Nevertheless, clinicians should be aware of the possibility of emergency symptoms of serotonin syndrome with these uses.
This medication is used for the treatment of psychiatric disorders such as depression. It may particularly increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or behaviors in young patients aged 18 to 24, so extreme caution should be exercised when administering it to this age group. This medication should not be used in certain patients, such as those who are allergic to this medication or its components, have severe kidney dysfunction, or are taking MAO inhibitors. Special caution is needed for patients with a history of seizures or mania, and those with heart disease or liver dysfunction should also be careful. For diabetic patients, blood sugar control may be affected, so blood sugar levels should be carefully monitored. This medication may cause various side effects, such as drowsiness, headaches, nausea, insomnia, fatigue, and diarrhea, so if any abnormal symptoms occur, consult a doctor immediately. Particularly in the early stages of treatment, symptoms such as suicidal thoughts or behavioral changes, aggression, and anxiety may occur, requiring careful observation by patients and caregivers. This medication may interact with other drugs, so inform healthcare providers of any other medications being taken, and it is advisable to avoid alcohol consumption. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should carefully consider the risks and benefits of using this medication and consult a specialist if necessary. It is recommended not to use this medication in children and adolescents, as safety and efficacy have not been established. Abruptly stopping the medication may cause withdrawal symptoms such as dizziness, anxiety, and headaches, so the dosage should be reduced gradually according to the doctor's instructions. This medication must be stored out of reach of children and should not be transferred to other containers.
