Reduction of cardiovascular disease risk and improvement of hyperlipidemia
This medication helps reduce the risk of serious events such as heart attack or stroke in adult patients at high risk for cardiovascular diseases like coronary artery disease, diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, and stroke. It also helps lower complications after cardiovascular surgery. Additionally, it effectively manages cholesterol and triglyceride levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and dyslipidemia, supporting cardiovascular health. Especially in children over the age of 10 with a family history or belonging to high-risk groups for hypercholesterolemia, it is used as an adjunct to diet to assist in cholesterol management. This medication plays an important role in reducing cardiovascular disease risk and improving blood lipid levels.
This medication is recommended to be administered once daily in the evening. The initial starting dose is 20 mg, but for patients with mild to moderate hypercholesterolemia, starting with 10 mg may be appropriate. The dose should be adjusted between 5-40 mg according to the patient's condition. For specific patient populations, separate dose adjustments such as 10 mg or 20 mg may be necessary. Pre-treatment LDL-cholesterol levels, treatment goals, and patient response to the medication should be determined before starting treatment.
The recommended starting dose for pediatric patients (ages 10-17) with familial heterozygous hypercholesterolemia is 10 mg once daily, with a recommended dosage range of 10-40 mg per day. Dosing should be adjusted appropriately based on treatment goals.
This medication carries the risk of serious side effects such as myopathy and rhabdomyolysis, particularly at high doses (80mg), so it is recommended that patients taking interacting medications use lower doses or different types of medications. It should not be used in certain patients, including those allergic to this medication or its components, those with severe liver dysfunction, pregnant or nursing women, and those taking certain antifungal or immunosuppressive agents. Patients with liver dysfunction or those who consume alcohol excessively, have renal impairment, have hypothyroidism, have muscle disorders, or have previously experienced muscle-related side effects, as well as elderly patients and women should use this medication cautiously and may need regular check-ups. During treatment, symptoms such as muscle pain, muscle weakness, abdominal pain, headache, dyspepsia, constipation, diarrhea, nausea may occur, and if any abnormal symptoms persist or worsen, a doctor should be consulted immediately. Since this medication is mainly metabolized in the liver, liver function tests should be conducted regularly, and if liver function abnormalities or jaundice occur, the medication should be discontinued. Several medications can increase the risk of myopathy when taken together, so it is essential to inform healthcare providers about this medication when starting any new medication. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not take this medication and must stop and consult healthcare providers if they find out they are pregnant during use. Additionally, this medication can be excreted in breast milk, so nursing women should discontinue breastfeeding while taking this medication. Children and adolescents can only use it from age 10 and particularly females can only use it after at least one year since menarche. Elderly patients may have higher blood levels of this medication, which requires caution when taking it, as the risk of myopathy may also increase. Grapefruit juice or large amounts of grapefruit should be avoided during this treatment, and in case of overdose, immediate medical attention should be sought. Lastly, this medication should be kept out of the reach of children and stored tightly sealed in its original container.
