Cefuroxime is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections, particularly stable against beta-lactamases, and effective against strains resistant to ampicillin and amoxicillin. It is used for treating upper respiratory infections such as otitis media, sinusitis, tonsillitis, and pharyngitis, as well as lower respiratory infections, including acute and chronic bronchitis and pneumonia. It is also effective for urinary tract infections like pyelonephritis, cystitis, and urethritis and is used for skin and soft tissue infections such as furuncles, pyoderma, and impetigo. It is used for curing gonorrhea in cases of uncomplicated acute gonococcal urethritis and cervicitis and is also applicable for treating early Lyme disease. Therefore, cefuroxime is a reliable antibiotic used for the treatment of multiple infections.

Precautions

This medication is a cephalosporin antibiotic and should not be used in patients with allergies to this class of drugs. Caution should be exercised when administering to patients with a history of allergy to penicillins or other beta-lactam antibiotics, allergic patients, patients with severe renal impairment, elderly patients, or those unable to take oral medication. Mild and transient side effects are common, with frequent adverse effects including headache, dizziness, diarrhea, nausea, and abdominal pain. Rarely, skin rashes, urticaria, itching, liver dysfunction, renal impairment, and severe skin reactions may occur, so if any unusual symptoms appear, immediate consultation with a physician is essential. During antibiotic use, there may be excessive proliferation of Candida species, and a decrease in beneficial intestinal bacteria could lead to diarrhea or pseudomembranous colitis; therefore, caution is necessary. This medication may induce dizziness while driving or operating machinery, so caution should be exercised. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should consult a physician before taking this medication, as its safety has not been established. Safety has not been verified for infants under 3 months old, and when administering to children, due to taste issues, it may be advisable to substitute with syrup formulations. Elderly patients may have increased bleeding risks due to renal impairment and vitamin K deficiency, so careful adjustment of dosage and intervals is necessary. This medication may affect some clinical test results, so it is important to inform healthcare personnel during testing. In case of overdose, central nervous system side effects such as seizures may occur, and blood dialysis or peritoneal dialysis can be used to reduce drug concentration. This medication should be kept out of reach of children and stored sealed in its original container to maintain quality.
