Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes
This medication helps to improve blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes by complementing diet and exercise therapy. It is typically used alone, but may be combined with insulin or metformin if blood sugar control is insufficient. It is particularly effective when the sulfonylurea or metformin monotherapy does not provide adequate response, enhancing treatment effects when combined. This medication effectively assists patients in managing blood sugar, thereby improving blood sugar control.
Dosage should be adjusted individually for each patient. This medication is taken orally once a day, before breakfast or just before the first meal. The initial dose is 1 mg of glymepiride, which can be increased by 1 mg at intervals of 1 to 2 weeks. Generally, additional effects will be minimal when dosing exceeds 4 mg; however, in some cases, it can be increased up to a maximum of 6 mg or 8 mg. The normal daily dose is 4 mg.
This medication should not be used in patients with type 1 diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, or those in a comatose state. Individuals allergic to this medication or its components, or to sulfonylureas should not take it. It is advisable to switch severely impaired liver or kidney function patients to insulin therapy instead of using this medication. Pregnant women, women who may become pregnant, and nursing mothers should not take this medication. Patients with severe infections, those undergoing surgery, or those who have suffered serious trauma are recommended to receive insulin therapy. Patients with gastrointestinal disturbances such as diarrhea or vomiting should be cautious, as unsuitable absorption of food may increase the risk of hypoglycemia. For the first week, there is an increased risk of hypoglycemia, so blood sugar levels should be checked frequently and monitored carefully. Special caution is needed for the elderly and those with poor nutritional status, irregular meals, or unbalanced exercise and carbohydrate intake. Those who consume alcohol excessively or skip meals, as well as patients with impaired kidney or liver function, also have an increased risk of hypoglycemia. Additionally, caution is required if this medication is taken in excessive amounts, in cases of endocrine disorders, among elderly patients, or when used in conjunction with other medications. This medication may cause hypoglycemia, with symptoms including headache, severe hunger, nausea, fatigue, anxiety, confusion, drowsiness, and loss of consciousness. Hypoglycemia usually recovers quickly with the intake of sugar, so it is important to always carry sugar. Also, vision may become temporarily blurred at first, and gastrointestinal disturbances or liver function impairment, blood disorders, and allergic reactions may occur rarely; consult a doctor immediately if abnormal symptoms arise. When taking this medication, it is necessary to maintain regular intake along with dietary and exercise therapy, and if blood sugar control is inadequate, consult your physician to adjust the treatment regimen. Sufficiently explain the risks and symptoms of hypoglycemia to the patient and their family, and inform any other healthcare provider about diabetes status and medication history when receiving treatment elsewhere. In cases of stress, surgery, or infection that complicates blood sugar control, temporary transition to insulin therapy may be needed. This medication is excreted through the kidneys, so elderly patients or those with reduced kidney function may require dose adjustments. In the case of overdose, severe hypoglycemia may occur, and immediate medical treatment should be sought.
