Efficacy & effects

Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes

  • Type 2 diabetes
  • impaired blood sugar control
View approved original text

This medication is used to improve blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes. It effectively manages blood sugar while assisting dietary and exercise regimens. It can also be administered as monotherapy and can be used in combination with other oral hypoglycemic agents or insulin if blood sugar control is insufficient. Especially in cases where blood sugar control is difficult with sulfonylureas or metformin monotherapy, combining this medication with metformin enhances therapeutic effects. This medication aids in the management of blood sugar and improves diabetes treatment.

How to take

Adult dose

For patients who have not previously been treated with the medication, start with 1 daily dose of 1 mg of Glimepiride. If necessary, increase the dose by 1 mg at intervals of 1-2 weeks. Generally, doses above 4 mg do not provide additional effects; however, some patients may achieve better metabolic control with doses of up to 6 mg (or 8 mg). If a dose of 4 mg daily is ineffective, consider switching to insulin therapy, otherwise consider combining with insulin or other oral diabetes medications.

Precautions

This medication should not be administered to patients with insulin-dependent diabetes or those with diabetic ketoacidosis or diabetic coma. Patients with hypersensitivity to this medication or with an allergy to sulfonylureas should not use it. Patients with severe liver or kidney dysfunction are recommended to avoid this medication and switch to insulin therapy. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, and those who are breastfeeding should not use this medication. Patients with severe infections, before and after surgery, or with severe trauma are advised to implement insulin therapy for safety. If gastrointestinal disorders such as diarrhea or vomiting occur, absorption of food may be hindered, increasing the risk of hypoglycemia, so caution is needed. This medication contains lactose, so patients with genetic issues such as lactose intolerance or galactose intolerance should not use it. During the initial dosing, the risk of hypoglycemia is high, so blood sugar should be checked frequently and symptoms should be carefully monitored, particularly in the elderly, malnourished patients, those who skip meals, and alcohol consumers. Patients with weak kidney or liver function may be more sensitive to this medication, so dose adjustments may be necessary. Patients with other endocrine disorders or those taking other medications may experience hypoglycemic symptoms, so consultation with a physician is essential. Caution should also be exercised in patients with allergies to additives in this medication. Hypoglycemic symptoms may include headache, severe hunger, nausea, fatigue, confusion, loss of consciousness, etc., so immediate intake of sugar or informing medical personnel is necessary when these symptoms arise. Blurred vision or gastrointestinal disturbances, liver dysfunction, blood abnormalities, and allergic reactions may occur rarely, so report any unusual symptoms to a doctor immediately. This medication should be taken regularly, and dietary and exercise regimens need to be followed; quickly ingesting sugar during hypoglycemic events is important. In stressful situations or during surgery or infections, blood sugar control may become difficult, thus transitioning to insulin therapy may be required. Drug interactions may occur, so inform medical personnel of any other medications being taken. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not use this medication and should choose alternative treatments. It is not used in children under 18 years of age as safety and efficacy have not been established. Elderly patients may require dose adjustments due to decreased kidney function. In case of overdose, severe hypoglycemia may occur, necessitating immediate appropriate treatment at a medical facility.
