Efficacy & effects

Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes

  • Blood sugar control problems in patients with type 2 diabetes
View approved original text

This medication is used to assist in improving blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes alongside dietary and exercise therapies. It can be administered alone and, in some cases, can be used in combination with other antihyperglycemic agents or insulin. Particularly, it can be used in combination with insulin when blood sugar control with oral antihyperglycemics is difficult or when monotherapy with sulfonylureas or metformin is ineffective, thus enhancing therapeutic effect. This medication helps effectively control the patient’s blood sugar.

How to take

Adult dose

Adjust individually for each patient. This medication is taken orally once a day. It should be taken before breakfast or immediately before the first meal. The initial dosage for monotherapy starts at 1 mg of Glimepiride taken once a day, and the dosage can be increased by 1 mg at 1-2 week intervals. Generally, there are minimal additional effects for dosages above 4 mg; however, at higher doses, a maximum of 6 mg or 8 mg can be reached.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients with insulin-dependent diabetes or in those suffering from diabetic ketoacidosis or coma. It should also be avoided by individuals who are allergic to this medication or to sulfonylurea agents, as well as those with severe liver or kidney dysfunction. It is not to be administered to pregnant or potentially pregnant women or to nursing mothers. Patients with severe infections or those who are pre- or post-surgery or have suffered major trauma are recommended to instead follow insulin therapy. Patients with gastrointestinal disorders may experience improper absorption of this medication, potentially leading to hypoglycemia, so caution is advised. Patients with genetic lactose intolerance or specific hereditary diseases should also avoid this medication. In the first week of taking this medication, there is an increased risk of hypoglycemia, so blood sugar should be checked frequently. Special caution is required for the elderly, individuals with poor nutritional status or irregular eating habits, and those who consume alcohol frequently. Individuals with weakened liver or kidney function may also respond more sensitively to this medication, so caution is necessary. If taking other medications, interaction may affect blood sugar control; therefore, it is essential to inform your doctor or pharmacist. Symptoms of hypoglycemia may occur, so it is important to be aware of these symptoms and to respond immediately. This medication may cause various side effects, including hypoglycemia, visual disturbances, digestive disorders, liver dysfunction, blood abnormalities, and allergic reactions. Notably, hypoglycemia symptoms may lead to headaches, severe hunger, nausea, fatigue, confusion, drowsiness, or loss of consciousness, so care should be taken. If an allergic reaction occurs, notify a doctor immediately, and in severe cases, discontinuation of the medication may be necessary. This medication should be taken alongside dietary and exercise therapies for blood sugar control, and regular intake is important. In the event of hypoglycemia, sugary foods should be consumed promptly to raise blood sugar. Regular blood sugar and urine sugar testing should be conducted during treatment to monitor the medication's efficacy. Care should be taken when driving or operating machinery due to the potential occurrence of hypoglycemia or impaired agility. Pregnant or nursing women should not take this medication, and transitioning to insulin therapy may be safer if necessary. In case of overdose, severe hypoglycemia may occur, so if overdose is suspected, immediate medical attention should be sought. This medication should be kept out of reach of children and stored in its original container.
