This medication reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease. It particularly decreases the risk of death caused by coronary heart disease and the risk of non-fatal myocardial infarction and stroke in adult patients with a history of coronary heart disease, diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, and stroke. Additionally, it helps to lower the risk of complications after vascular interventions, facilitating safer treatment. For patients with hyperlipidemia, it decreases total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, Apo-B protein, and triglyceride levels, while increasing HDL-cholesterol to improve serum lipid levels. It is specifically used to treat familial hypercholesterolemia and various dyslipidemias and acts as an adjunct to diet in certain pediatric patients with hypercholesterolemia. Overall, it is used to protect cardiovascular health and effectively treat dyslipidemia.
