Reduction of risk for cardiovascular diseases and improvement of hyperlipidemia
This medication is used to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. It decreases the risk of events related to coronary artery disease, such as heart attacks, in adults with a history of coronary artery disease, diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, and stroke, along with several complications associated with it. Additionally, it is utilized as an adjunct therapy to dietary measures in patients with hyperlipidemia, improving cholesterol and triglyceride levels to enhance vascular health. Notably, it helps effectively control cholesterol levels in pediatric patients with a family history or specific types of hypercholesterolemia. This medication is effective in maintaining overall cardiovascular health and lowering the risk of heart diseases.
Patients taking this medication must adhere to a standard cholesterol-lowering diet before and during treatment. 1. Reduction of risk for cardiovascular disease - The recommended initial starting dose of simvastatin is 40 mg once daily. 2. Hyperlipidemia - The commonly recommended initial starting dose is 20 mg taken once daily in the evening. - For patients with mild to moderate hypercholesterolemia, starting with 10 mg is recommended.
3. Pediatric patients (10 to 17 years) with familial heterozygous hypercholesterolemia - The recommended initial dose is 10 mg once daily in the evening. - The recommended dose range is 10 to 40 mg daily.
This medication can cause serious muscle-related side effects, such as myopathy and rhabdomyolysis. The risk is higher especially when taken in high doses, so consultation with a physician is necessary immediately if symptoms of muscle pain or weakness occur while taking high doses. This medication should not be used in certain patients. For example, patients who are allergic to the drug or its ingredients, those with severely impaired liver function, pregnant or breastfeeding women, and those taking certain strong medications should not use this medication. Patients with liver or kidney problems, hypothyroidism, hereditary muscle disorders, or severe myasthenia gravis should take this medication with special caution. Elderly and female patients may also be at higher risk for side effects. It is important to regularly monitor liver function and muscle condition while taking this medication. If symptoms of muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness appear, or signs of liver dysfunction arise, medical personnel should be informed immediately. This medication can interact with various other medications, so it is crucial to inform the physician if other drugs are being taken. The risk of muscle side effects may increase when used with CYP3A4 inhibitors or certain lipid-lowering medications, antibiotics, and antiviral agents. Women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant should not take this medication, and if pregnancy is confirmed while taking it, it should be discontinued immediately. In children or adolescents, it may only be used limitedly depending on specific age and conditions, and it should not be used in children under 10 years of age. This medication may increase the risk of liver damage when consuming alcohol, so intake of alcohol should be avoided or limited. In case of overdose, general emergency measures should be taken as there is no specific antidote. Finally, this medication should be kept out of the reach of children and stored in its original container.
