Efficacy & effects

Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes

  • Type 2 diabetes
View approved original text

This medication is used in conjunction with diet and exercise to help control blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. It can be used alone, or in some cases, in combination with other oral hypoglycemics or insulin. Particularly, when blood sugar control is difficult with sulfonylureas or metformin monotherapy, it can be used with metformin. This helps to improve blood sugar control and enables more effective diabetes management.

How to take

Adult dose

For patients who have not previously been treated with medication, initiate treatment with 1 mg of glimepiride once daily. If necessary, increase the dose by 1 mg at intervals of 1 to 2 weeks. Generally, there is little additional effect when doses exceed 4 mg, but some patients may be able to increase to 6 mg (or 8 mg). If 4 mg daily fails, consider insulin therapy.

Precautions

This drug should not be used in patients with type 1 diabetes or those suffering from diabetic ketoacidosis or coma. Those who have had allergic reactions to this drug, its components, or sulfonylureas should not take it. In patients with severe liver or kidney impairment, it is advisable to switch to insulin treatment instead of using this drug. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, and breastfeeding women should not take this medication. In patients with severe infections, post-surgery, or severe trauma, insulin therapy is recommended. Patients with gastrointestinal disorders such as diarrhea or vomiting should be cautious as the risk of hypoglycemia increases with this drug. This drug contains lactose, so individuals with lactose deficiency or galactose intolerance should not take it. During the first week of treatment, there is a high risk of hypoglycemia, so blood sugar levels should be monitored frequently and carefully observed. Elderly patients, those with poor nutritional status, irregular eating patterns, excessive alcohol intake, and reduced liver or kidney function are at a higher risk for hypoglycemia. Caution is also needed in patients with other endocrine disorders or those who have overdosed on medications. Those with an allergy to Yellow No. 4 (Tartrazine) should use this drug with caution. Symptoms of hypoglycemia may include headache, severe hunger, nausea, fatigue, confusion, drowsiness, decreased consciousness, etc., and immediate treatment is required if these symptoms occur. Blurred vision or gastrointestinal disturbances, and in rare cases, liver dysfunction or blood abnormalities may also occur, so the physician should be informed if abnormal symptoms develop. While taking this medication, regular meals and exercise are important, and blood sugar control should be continuously monitored. In the event of hypoglycemia, quickly consuming sugar is necessary to alleviate symptoms, as non-sweeteners containing no sugar are ineffective. When taking this drug with others, inform your doctor or pharmacist about any medications you are currently taking, as interactions may affect blood sugar control. If pregnant or breastfeeding, consult a physician as it may be harmful to the fetus or newborn. In the case of overdose, severe hypoglycemia may occur, and you should seek medical attention promptly for appropriate treatment. Safety and efficacy in children have not been established, and elderly patients may require dosage adjustments due to decreased kidney function. Store this drug out of reach of children and keep it tightly closed in its original container.
