Improvement in blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes
This medication is used to help control blood sugar in patients with type 2 diabetes. It can be administered alone or in combination with other hypoglycemic agents or insulin, depending on the patient's condition, along with a dietary and exercise regimen. In particular, it is recommended for those individuals who find it difficult to control their blood sugar with oral hypoglycemics or monotherapy with sulfonylureas and metformin. This medication helps improve blood sugar control, assisting in diabetes management.
For patients who have not received treatment with a medication before, start with 1 mg of Glimepiride once daily. If needed, the dose may be increased by 1 mg at intervals of 1 to 2 weeks. Generally, there is little additional benefit at doses above 4 mg, although some patients may require an increase up to 6 mg (or 8 mg). If a dosage of 4 mg daily fails, insulin therapy can be considered.
This medication should not be used by patients with insulin-dependent diabetes or severe liver or kidney dysfunction. Additionally, it is safest not to administer it to women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. During the first week of treatment, there is a heightened risk of hypoglycemia, so blood sugar should be monitored very closely. Elderly patients, those with poor nutritional status or irregular eating patterns, and individuals who consume alcohol frequently may have a higher risk of hypoglycemia. Symptoms of hypoglycemia may include headache, severe hunger, nausea, fatigue, confusion, drowsiness, and loss of consciousness, so immediate intake of glucose is necessary when these symptoms occur. During the course of this medication, it is important to maintain regular meals and exercise and to regularly monitor blood sugar levels. Moreover, when taken with other medications, it may affect blood sugar control; therefore, patients should inform their doctor or pharmacist about any other medications they are taking. Interactions may occur, especially with beta-blockers, antibiotics, and anticoagulants. In case of overdose, serious hypoglycemia can occur, and immediate medical attention should be sought for appropriate treatment. The safety and efficacy of this medication in children have not been established, and for the elderly, dosage adjustments may be necessary due to potential reduced kidney function. Lastly, store this medication out of reach of children and in its original container for safety.
