Improvement of blood sugar control in insulin-independent diabetes
This medication is used in the treatment of insulin-independent (Type 2) diabetes mellitus in adults. It is administered as a second-line treatment when dietary and exercise therapy alone are insufficient for blood sugar control, or when previous treatments with metformin or sulfonylurea monotherapy have not been effective. It is also utilized to replace prior combined therapy with metformin and sulfonylurea in patients with stable blood sugar control. This medication helps manage diabetes by improving blood sugar regulation.
The usual starting dose is 1 tablet of Metformin Hydrochloride/Glyburide 500/2.5 mg once a day. In patients receiving combined therapy of Metformin Hydrochloride and Glyburide, 2 tablets are administered daily with meals. The dose may be increased by 1 tablet every 1-2 weeks based on the patient's blood sugar levels, with a maximum dose of Metformin Hydrochloride/Glyburide 500/5 mg being administered up to 4 tablets daily.
This medication can cause severe lactic acidosis and hypoglycemia; if such symptoms occur, immediate medical attention is required. Patients with cardiovascular disease should be particularly cautious, as this medication may increase the risk of cardiovascular problems. Patients with severely impaired kidney function, heart failure, or those who have had a recent myocardial infarction should not use this medication. Patients scheduled for examinations using radiological iodinated contrast media should discontinue this medication 48 hours prior to the examination and only resume after normal kidney function is confirmed. This medication should not be administered to individuals with an allergic reaction to it, Type 1 diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, or pre-coma. Patients with severe infections or traumatic systemic disorders should temporarily discontinue this medication, and it should also be stopped for a certain period before and after surgeries. Caution is needed when using this medication in patients with poor nutritional status, liver dysfunction, lung function impairment, or excessive alcohol intake. It is advisable for pregnant or potentially pregnant women and nursing mothers to avoid using this medication. This medication can induce hypoglycemic symptoms, so it should be taken with regular meals, and appropriate measures should be taken immediately if hypoglycemic symptoms occur. Additionally, this medication can cause gastrointestinal disturbances, but symptoms usually resolve over time. Regular testing of liver function, kidney function, and blood tests should be performed to monitor for abnormalities during treatment with this medication. It may interact with other medications, so if other drugs are being taken, the physician or pharmacist must be informed. In cases of overdose, severe hypoglycemia or lactic acidosis may occur, so immediate emergency treatment should be sought if symptoms develop. Caution should be exercised while driving or operating machinery, as hypoglycemic symptoms or blurred vision may occur. This medication should be stored out of reach of children, and transferring it to other containers should be avoided. Finally, while taking this medication, management of condition through regular meals, exercise, and periodic blood sugar and blood tests is essential.
