View approved original text

This medication assists in improving blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes along with dietary and exercise therapy. It can be used alone, and if blood sugar control is insufficient when used alone, it can be combined with other hypoglycemic agents or insulin. For example, this medication can be used together with metformin when monotherapy with sulfonylureas or metformin is not effective. It can be flexibly used in various situations, making it effective for diabetes management. In summary, this medication is used to improve blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes.

How to take

Adult dose

For patients who have not previously received medication, treatment is initiated with a dose of 1 mg of glimepiride once daily. If necessary, the dose can be increased by 1 mg at 1 to 2-week intervals. Generally, there is little added benefit when doses exceeding 4 mg are administered; however, some patients may be increased to 6 mg (or 8 mg). If an initial dose of 4 mg daily fails, insulin therapy should be considered.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients with insulin-dependent diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis, or in a comatose state. Patients who are allergic to this medication or its components, or to sulfonylurea or sulfonamide drugs, should not take it. For patients with severely reduced liver or kidney function, it is recommended to switch to insulin therapy instead of using this medication. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, and women who are breastfeeding should not take this medication. Insulin therapy is needed for patients with severe infections, before and after surgery, or those who have suffered serious trauma, and this medication should not be used. In cases of gastrointestinal disturbances such as diarrhea or vomiting, caution should be taken as food absorption may be compromised, increasing the risk of hypoglycemia. This medication contains lactose, so patients with genetic disorders such as galactose intolerance, lactase deficiency, or glucose-galactose malabsorption should not take it. During the first week of treatment, the risk of hypoglycemia is high, so blood sugar should be monitored particularly closely, and caution should be exercised for the elderly, malnourished patients, those who skip meals, individuals with irregular eating habits, alcohol consumers, and patients with reduced kidney or liver function. Also, when taking other medications, interactions may affect blood sugar control, so patients must inform their physician or pharmacist. Symptoms of hypoglycemia include headache, severe hunger, nausea, fatigue, dizziness, confusion, drowsiness, and loss of consciousness; if these symptoms occur, sugar should be consumed immediately or medical personnel should be notified. While taking this medication, blurred vision, gastrointestinal symptoms, liver dysfunction, blood abnormalities, and allergic reactions may rarely occur; if unusual symptoms arise, consult a physician immediately. When taking this medication, regular meals, exercise, and weight management should be maintained, and blood sugar and urine tests should be conducted regularly. During pregnancy or breastfeeding, insulin therapy is recommended instead of this medication, and safety and efficacy have not been established for children under 18 years of age. In the case of overdose, hypoglycemia may worsen, so immediate emergency treatment should be sought, and it should be kept out of reach of children. While taking this medication, inform healthcare providers about your diabetes condition and treatment experiences, and consult a physician if lifestyle changes or health status changes occur.
