(Infection) Treatment of bacterial infections, (Ophthalmic conditions) Improvement of eye inflammation
Tobramycin is used for the treatment of infections caused by various bacteria. It is mainly effective against Staphylococcus infections, such as Staphylococcus aureus, coagulase-negative Staphylococcus, and penicillin-resistant strains, as well as some Streptococcus and Pneumococcus infections. It also helps in infections caused by various aerobic enterobacteria like Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli and other bacteria. This medication is useful for the treatment of complicated bacterial infections and should be used appropriately based on the patient's sensitivity to the bacteria. It is also applied to inflammatory conditions of the eye and ophthalmic diseases, improving various inflammatory states such as corneal injury and chronic anterior uveitis. Thus, Tobramycin is effectively used for the treatment of various types of bacterial infections and eye inflammation.
Instill approximately 1 cm into the conjunctival sac 3 to 4 times daily. (Do not administer more than 8g initially.)
This medication should not be used in patients with viral infections of the eye such as viral keratitis, vaccinia, varicella, or in individuals allergic to this medication, as well as in children and nursing mothers. Local side effects may occur such as eyelid itching or swelling and conjunctival hyperemia, and rarely, serious eye conditions such as vision loss, glaucoma, or cataracts may arise. Careful observation of blood levels is necessary when used in combination with other aminoglycoside drugs, and immediate cessation of use is required if a sensitivity reaction occurs. Caution is needed as the steroid component of this medication may conceal or exacerbate acute purulent infections of the eye. Long-term use may lead to fungal infections of the cornea and an increased risk of secondary bacterial infections due to immunosuppression, hence immediate medical attention should be sought if corneal ulcers persist. Overuse may lead to punctate keratopathy, erythema, increased tears, and symptoms of blurred vision are also reported occasionally. Long-term use may allow for the proliferation of resistant pathogens or fungi, and cross-reactivity with other aminoglycoside drugs may occur. If reinfection occurs, appropriate treatment should be followed, especially in cases of chickenpox or measles during the use of this medication, as serious complications may arise, hence history and vaccination status must be verified beforehand. If suspicion or occurrence of varicella or measles infection arises during the use of this medication, immediate medical attention should be sought, and even those vaccinated may be at risk of infection. Systemic or local steroid use may result in visual disturbances, thus if blurred vision or abnormal vision arises, an ophthalmologist's evaluation should be obtained. During pregnancy, the safety has not been established, and pregnant women or those who may become pregnant should only use this medication if the benefits outweigh the risks. It is advisable not to use this medication in children, as safety and efficacy have not been confirmed. This medication should only be used as an eye drop and not injected directly into the eye, and care should be taken to avoid contact with the tip of the container during application. Co-use poses a risk of contamination and should be avoided if possible, and when storing, it should be placed in a cool, dry place out of the reach of children, and should not be transferred to other containers.
