Efficacy & effects

Improvement in blood sugar control for type 2 diabetes

View approved original text

This medication is used to improve blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes. It acts as an adjunct to dietary and physical exercise therapies and can be administered alone. However, if blood sugar control is insufficient, it may be used in combination with other oral hypoglycemic agents or insulin. Combination therapy is especially recommended for patients who have difficulty controlling blood sugar levels with sulfonylureas or metformin. This medication is effective in controlling blood sugar levels and aiding in diabetes management.

How to take

Adult dose

Individual adjustment is required for each patient. Administered orally once a day, taken before breakfast or immediately before the first meal. For patients who have not previously received medication, the initial dose starts at 1 mg once daily, increasing by 1 mg at 1-2 week intervals. Generally, administering more than 4 mg provides little additional benefit, although some patients may increase to 6 mg or 8 mg. 1 day

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus or diabetic ketoacidosis, or in patients who are in diabetic coma. Patients with an allergy to this drug or sulfonylureas or sulfonamides should also avoid its use. Since this medication contains lactose, individuals with lactose intolerance or genetic galactose metabolism disorders should not take it. Patients with severe hepatic or renal impairment should avoid using this medication, and in such cases, switching to insulin therapy is recommended. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, as well as nursing mothers, should not take this medication. Patients with severe infections, those who have recently undergone surgery, or those who have suffered major trauma should also receive insulin therapy instead of this medication. Care should be taken as gastrointestinal disturbances such as vomiting or diarrhea can lead to hypoglycemia due to improper food absorption. In the first week of taking this medication, there is a heightened risk of hypoglycemia, so blood sugar levels should be closely monitored. Particularly, seniors, individuals with poor nutritional status, those who eat irregularly, engage in excessive exercise, or have changes in food intake should be especially cautious. Individuals who frequently consume alcohol or have impaired renal or hepatic function may also have an increased risk of hypoglycemia. Caution is also advised in cases of overdose or certain endocrine disorders, as the risk of hypoglycemia can be elevated. Symptoms of hypoglycemia may include headaches, severe hunger, nausea, fatigue, anxiety, confusion, drowsiness, decreased consciousness, and more, necessitating immediate consumption of sugar if such symptoms occur. During the course of taking this medication, blurred vision, digestive discomfort, abdominal pain, liver dysfunction, hematological disturbances, or allergic reactions may occur, and if any unusual symptoms arise, consult your doctor. If a severe allergic reaction occurs, discontinue the medication immediately and seek medical help. It is extremely important to maintain a regular diet, exercise, and weight management while taking this medication, and it is advised to always carry sugar for quick response to hypoglycemia. If taking other medications, these may affect blood sugar, so always inform your healthcare provider about any other medications you are on. Pregnant or nursing women should avoid the use of this medication and opt for other alternatives such as insulin therapy if necessary. This medication is not recommended for children under 18 years of age, as safety and efficacy have not been established. In seniors, special attention should be paid to dosage adjustments due to potential decreased renal function. In the event of overdose, hypoglycemia may worsen, requiring immediate emergency treatment, which may involve inducing vomiting, gastric lavage, or glucose injection.
