Treatment and suppression of herpes zoster, genital herpes, and herpes simplex (cold sores)
This medication is used to treat various herpes virus infections, including herpes zoster and genital herpes. It is particularly effective for patients with impaired immune function who have herpes zoster and herpes simplex infections. The tablet form is available in a range of dosages from 125 mg to 750 mg to be prescribed according to the patient's condition. The cream form is used for herpes simplex virus infections such as cold sores. This medication helps treat herpes virus infections and prevent recurrence, improving patient symptoms and contributing to recovery.
1. Treatment of herpes zoster Adults: Administer 250 mg of famciclovir per dose orally, 3 times daily for 7 days. It is advisable to start treatment as soon as symptoms appear after infection. 2. Treatment of initial genital herpes infection Adults: Administer 250 mg of this medicine per dose orally, 3 times daily for 5 days. It is advisable to start treatment as soon as symptoms appear after infection. 3. Treatment of acute recurrent genital herpes infection Adults: Administer 125 mg of this medicine per dose orally, 2 times daily for 5 days. It is advisable to start treatment during the prodromal period or as soon as symptoms appear after infection. 4. Suppression of recurrent genital herpes Adults: Administer 250 mg of this medicine per dose orally, 2 times daily. Discontinue treatment periodically every 6~12 months to observe whether the natural course of the disease has changed. 5. Patients with renal impairment: Since the clearance of this medicine is reduced in patients with renal impairment, adjust the dose with caution. The dosage for these patients is as follows. 1) Treatment of herpes zoster and initial genital herpes infection: Creatinine clearance (mL/min/1.73㎡) 30~59: 250 mg per dose, 2 times daily Creatinine clearance (mL/min/1.73㎡) 10~29: 250 mg per dose, once daily 2) Treatment of acute recurrent genital herpes infection: Creatinine clearance (mL/min/1.73㎡) 30~59: 125 mg per dose, 2 times daily Creatinine clearance (mL/min/1.73㎡) 10~29: 125 mg per dose, once daily 3) Suppression of recurrent genital herpes infection: Creatinine clearance (mL/min/1.73㎡) 30~59: 250 mg per dose, 2 times daily Creatinine clearance (mL/min/1.73㎡) 10~29: 125 mg per dose, 2 times daily 4) If only serum creatinine is known, creatinine clearance can be calculated using the following formula: Men: {weight (kg) × (140-age)}/ {72 × serum creatinine (mg/dL)} Women: 0.85 × the value calculated for men 5) Patients with renal impairment undergoing hemodialysis For patients on hemodialysis, it is advisable to administer this medicine every 48 hours, taking the dialysis interval into account. Hemodialysis for 4 hours reduces the plasma concentration of this medicine by approximately 75%; therefore, administer this medicine immediately after dialysis. The recommended dose is 250mg for patients with herpes zoster and 125mg for patients with genital herpes. 6. Patients with hepatic impairment: No dose adjustment is required in patients with chronic compensated liver disease. There is insufficient treatment experience in patients with overt chronic decompensated liver disease; therefore, no clear recommended dose has been established.
This medication should not be used in patients who have had an allergic reaction to this medication or its components, including the active ingredient, penciclovir. Additionally, it contains lactose; therefore, patients with genetic disorders that prevent the digestion of lactose should not take this medication. Patients with kidney function issues should use this medication with caution, and dosage adjustments may be necessary. While taking this medication, side effects such as headache, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, drowsiness, rash, and itching may occur; if symptoms are severe, consult medical personnel. This medication does not completely cure genital herpes, so it is important to avoid sexual contact when symptoms are present and to maintain safe sex practices. If dizziness, drowsiness, or confusion occurs while taking this medication, avoid driving or operating machinery. Patients with mildly impaired liver function do not require specific dose adjustments; however, those with severe liver dysfunction may experience reduced efficacy, so caution is needed. This medication has a low potential for interactions with other drugs, but when taken with certain drugs, blood levels may change, so inform your medical personnel of any medications you are taking. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should carefully weigh the benefits and risks of using this medication, as should breastfeeding women. Children under 18 are not recommended for use due to an absence of established safety and efficacy. Generally, elderly patients do not require dose adjustments, but they may need adjustments if kidney function is diminished. In the case of overdose, seek appropriate treatment at a medical facility immediately, and blood dialysis may reduce drug concentration.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This medication is sensitive to air and humidity, so it should be stored in a sealed container. It is also advisable to store it in a cool, dry place below 30 degrees Celsius.
