This medication is used to treat infections caused by various bacteria, including Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Pneumococcus, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, and Escherichia coli. It is primarily effective for treating complicated skin and soft tissue infections, secondary infections of respiratory diseases such as chronic bronchitis, and urinary tract infections like acute pyelonephritis, cystitis, and prostatitis. Additionally, it is used for infections related to gonococcal and non-gonococcal urethritis, infections of the uterus and its appendages, and ocular infections. Rarely, it is also applied to treat complicated internal infections such as cholecystitis and cholangitis, as well as in some cases of otitis media or sinusitis. This drug should be used cautiously for acute bacterial sinusitis, exacerbations of acute pulmonary diseases, and simple urinary tract infections when no other treatment options are available. Overall, it is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections, improving symptoms and aiding recovery.

Dosage and Administration

Adult dosage

Typically, adults are given levofloxacin 100 mg once orally, 2-3 times a day. For patients with severe conditions or insufficient efficacy, 200 mg is administered once, 3 times a day. Adjust according to age and symptoms.

Precautions

This drug is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections. This medication may cause serious side effects such as tendon issues like tendinitis or tendon rupture, peripheral neuropathy, central nervous system disorders, and exacerbation of myasthenia gravis. If these serious adverse reactions occur, the use of this drug should be immediately discontinued, and re-administration should be avoided. Particularly, patients with myasthenia gravis should not use this drug as their symptoms may worsen. This medication should only be used for specific infections such as acute bacterial sinusitis, exacerbations of chronic bronchitis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, simple urinary tract infections, and acute otitis media when no other treatment options are available. While taking this medication, there may be an increased risk of tendon rupture in the shoulder, hands, Achilles tendon, etc., particularly in the elderly, patients with renal impairment, immunocompromised patients, those on high-dose therapy, and those receiving corticosteroid treatment. Corticosteroids should be avoided in conjunction, and if tendon pain or inflammation occurs, the medication should be stopped immediately and rest should be taken. This medication acts as a neuromuscular blocker and can cause serious side effects in patients with myasthenia gravis, so caution is needed. It should not be administered to patients with hypersensitivity to this drug or a history of tendinitis or tendon rupture caused by this or similar antibiotics, to children under 18 years of age, to pregnant women or those who may become pregnant, to nursing mothers, and to patients with epilepsy. Dosage should be carefully adjusted for those with severe renal impairment, central nervous system disorders, a history of convulsions, those currently taking certain anti-inflammatories or theophylline, the elderly, diabetic patients, those with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, and those with a history of aortic aneurysms or valvular heart disease. This drug may cause severe allergic reactions, neurological symptoms, cardiac rhythm irregularities, renal and liver function abnormalities, blood disorders, gastrointestinal issues, musculoskeletal problems, and severe skin reactions; thus, any unusual symptoms should prompt immediate consultation with a healthcare professional. This medication may increase the risk of seizures, so patients with central nervous system disorders should be especially careful, and to prevent phototoxic reactions, strong sunlight or exposure to artificial UV light should be avoided. Caution is also required when driving or operating machinery as dizziness, drowsiness, or visual disturbances may occur. The absorption of this drug may be reduced when taken with certain antacids, iron, calcium, etc., so it should be taken with time intervals, and when taken with anticoagulants such as warfarin, the risk of bleeding may increase, requiring blood tests to monitor conditions. Pregnant women or nursing mothers should not use this drug, and breastfeeding should be discontinued during treatment. In the elderly, the concentration of the drug may increase due to renal function decline, so the dosage and administration intervals should be adjusted, and treatment should be discontinued immediately if signs of hepatotoxicity occur. In cases of overdose, central nervous system symptoms and cardiac abnormalities may appear, requiring immediate medical attention.
