Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes
This medication is used together with diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes. It can also be administered alone, and if blood sugar control is insufficient with oral hypoglycemics alone, it can be used in combination with insulin. Additionally, when blood sugar control is difficult with sulfonylureas or metformin monotherapy, this medication can be used in conjunction with metformin. This helps to manage the patient's blood sugar levels more effectively. This medication is used to improve blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes.
This medication is taken orally once a day before breakfast or just before the first meal. The initial dosage is 1mg of glimepiride once a day, which can be increased by 1mg every 1 to 2 weeks. Generally, the maximum dose is 4mg, and if necessary, it can be increased to 6mg or 8mg. If a dose of 4mg does not provide adequate effect, considering insulin therapy or combining with other oral diabetic medications is suggested.
This medication should not be used in patients with insulin-dependent diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, or those in a coma. Additionally, individuals allergic to this medication or sulfonylureas or sulfonamide medications may be at risk if administered. It is also advisable not to use this medication in patients with severe liver or kidney impairment, and it should not be taken by pregnant or nursing women. In cases of severe infections, pre- or post-surgery, or severe trauma, insulin therapy is recommended. Patients with gastrointestinal disorders may have an increased risk of hypoglycemia due to inadequate food absorption, so caution is advised. This medication contains lactose, so patients with lactose intolerance or certain genetic metabolic disorders should not take it. During the first week of treatment, the risk of hypoglycemia is high, so blood sugar levels should be monitored carefully. Individuals who are malnourished, have irregular eating patterns, have imbalanced exercise and carbohydrate intake, or experience changes in meal quantities may also face a higher risk of hypoglycemia. Those who frequently consume alcohol or have weak liver or kidney function may be more sensitive to hypoglycemia and should take precautions. Also, elderly patients or those with thyroid, pituitary, or adrenal dysfunction should be cautious of the risk of hypoglycemia. Additionally, when taking this medication with other drugs, interactions may affect blood sugar control, so consulting with a physician is essential. The most common side effect of this medication is hypoglycemia, which may manifest as headaches, severe hunger, nausea, fatigue, confusion, and in severe cases loss of consciousness or seizures. Rarely, there may be visual disturbances, gastrointestinal symptoms, liver dysfunction, blood abnormalities, or allergic reactions, so if any abnormal symptoms appear, it is crucial to inform a doctor immediately. Particularly in cases of severe allergic reactions, such as hives, difficulty breathing, or low blood pressure, the medication should be discontinued immediately, and medical professional consultation is necessary. It is important to take this medication regularly for blood sugar control along with diet, exercise, and weight management. If hypoglycemia symptoms occur, one should promptly consume foods or drinks containing sugar and educate patients and families about hypoglycemia symptoms and treatment methods. When blood sugar control is challenging due to stress situations, surgeries, or infections, insulin therapy may be transitioned. When taking this medication with other drugs that may lower or raise blood sugar levels, it is crucial to inform the medical staff about any concurrent medications. Special attention is needed for potential interactions with beta-blockers, certain antibiotics, antifungals, and steroids. Pregnant or nursing women should not take this medication, and if planning to become pregnant, alternatives such as insulin therapy should be discussed with a physician. The safety and efficacy of this medication have not been established in children, so it is recommended not to be used. In cases of overdose, severe hypoglycemia may occur, so if symptoms are severe, appropriate treatment should be received promptly at a hospital. This medication should be stored out of reach of children, kept in its original container, and not transferred to other containers for safety.
