Efficacy & effects

Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes

  • Blood sugar control issues in patients with type 2 diabetes
View approved original text

This medication is used to enhance blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes. It can be administered alone as an adjunct to dietary and exercise therapy, and in cases where blood sugar control is insufficient, it may be used in combination with insulin or metformin. In particular, when blood sugar control is difficult with sulfonylureas or metformin monotherapy, this medication can be used in conjunction to increase effectiveness. It assists patients in managing their blood sugar and improving symptoms of diabetes.

How to take

Adult dose

This medication is taken orally once daily. It should be taken before breakfast or immediately before the first meal, and should be swallowed without chewing with more than half a cup of water. For monotherapy, patients who have not previously received medication should begin with 1 mg of glimepiride taken once daily. If needed, the dose can be increased by 1 mg at intervals of 1-2 weeks, and generally, additional effects are minimal when 4 mg or more is administered.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients with insulin-dependent diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, or those in a coma. Furthermore, patients who have had allergic reactions to this medication or to sulfonylureas or sulfonamides should not be administered this medication. There is no experience with this medication in patients with severely impaired liver or kidney function, and switching to insulin therapy is recommended in such cases. It is safer not to use this medication in pregnant women or those who may become pregnant, as well as in breastfeeding women. Patients with severe infections, pre- and post-surgery, or severe trauma should consider insulin therapy, and care should be taken in cases of gastrointestinal disorders such as diarrhea or vomiting due to the risk of hypoglycemia. During the first week of treatment, the risk of hypoglycemia is high, so blood sugar should be closely monitored, particularly in elderly patients, those with poor nutritional status or irregular meal intake, excessive exercise, carbohydrate intake imbalances, frequent alcohol use, and patients taking other medications. Symptoms of hypoglycemia can manifest in various ways including headache, severe hunger, nausea, fatigue, confusion, drowsiness, loss of consciousness, etc., so if these symptoms occur, immediate intake of sugar or consultation with medical personnel is advised. This medication lowers blood sugar, thus it should be taken with regular meals, exercise, and weight management, and if blood sugar control is inadequate, treatment methods should be adjusted after consultation with a doctor. When taken with other medications, interactions may occur; therefore, if you are taking other medications, be sure to inform your healthcare professional. In case of overdose, severe hypoglycemia may occur, requiring immediate emergency treatment, and treatments such as inducing vomiting or intravenous glucose may be necessary. This medication has not established safety and effectiveness in children, and dose adjustment is needed for elderly patients due to decreased kidney function. Lastly, this medication must be stored in its original container and kept out of reach of children, and if any adverse reactions occur while taking this medication, immediate consultation with medical personnel is necessary.
