Treatment of esophagitis and heartburn; treatment and prevention of recurrence of gastric and duodenal ulcers; improvement of gastric lesions in gastritis
This medication is used to treat active gastric and duodenal ulcers and to prevent the recurrence of duodenal ulcers. It also alleviates symptoms of erosive and ulcerative esophagitis diagnosed via endoscopy and heartburn due to gastroesophageal reflux disease. It improves gastric mucosal lesions resulting from the exacerbation of acute and chronic gastritis. Therefore, this medication effectively treats symptoms of various gastrointestinal disorders and aids in healing mucosal damage.
1. Treatment of active gastric and duodenal ulcers Adults: Administer 300mg of nizatidine once daily at bedtime, or 150mg twice daily, in the morning and evening, by mouth. Most ulcers heal within 4 weeks, but treatment may be continued for up to 8 weeks if necessary. In cases of active gastric ulcer, malignancy must be ruled out before treatment. 2. Prevention of recurrence of duodenal ulcers Adults: After healing of a duodenal ulcer, administer 150mg orally once daily at bedtime. Treatment may continue for up to 1 year; results of longer-term administration are not known. 3. Gastroesophageal reflux disease Adults: Administer 150mg orally twice daily, in the morning and evening. Treatment may continue for up to 12 weeks. 4. Improvement of gastric mucosal lesions Adults: Administer 150mg orally twice daily, in the morning and evening, for 2 weeks. 5. Dosage adjustment in patients with severe renal impairment The dose should be reduced and adjusted as follows in patients with renal impairment. Active duodenal ulcer, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), benign gastric ulcer Creatinine clearance 20~50 ml/min: 150mg daily Creatinine clearance < 20 ml/min: 150mg every other day Maintenance therapy Creatinine clearance 20~50 ml/min: 150mg every other day Creatinine clearance < 20 ml/min: 150mg every 3 days Some elderly patients may have a creatinine clearance below 50mL/min. Based on pharmacokinetic data in patients with renal impairment, the dose should also be reduced in these patients according to the degree of renal impairment. The clinical effects of this dosage reduction in patients with renal impairment have not been evaluated.
This medication should not be used in patients with hypersensitivity to H2-receptor antagonists. It should be used with caution in patients with a history of allergic reactions to the drug or with liver and kidney function issues. In particular, patients with impaired kidney function may need to reduce the dosage or extend the interval between doses, as drug concentrations may remain in the body longer. Rarely, allergic symptoms such as skin rash, itching, and difficulty breathing may occur during treatment; if these symptoms arise, the medication should be discontinued immediately. Blood-related abnormalities such as anemia, leukopenia, and thrombocytopenia may occur, so patients should consult a doctor if symptoms appear. Gastrointestinal symptoms may include constipation, diarrhea, dry mouth, and nausea. Liver function abnormalities have also been reported, with symptoms of hepatitis or jaundice possibly occurring, so caution regarding liver health is important. Psychological effects such as dizziness, drowsiness, headaches, and confusion can occur rarely, and there have been reports of seizures. Cardiac-related effects may include transient cardiac arrhythmias. In women, breast enlargement can occur rarely, while in men, erectile dysfunction or reduced libido have been reported, but these are generally infrequent. Skin conditions may include sweating, urticaria, rash, and dermatitis. Other reports include hyperuricemia unrelated to gout, fever, myalgia, and cough. This medication may mask symptoms of gastric cancer, so it should be used only after confirming the absence of malignant disease. It is primarily excreted through the kidneys, so dosage adjustments are needed for patients with reduced kidney function, and the therapeutic effects and side effects should be monitored closely. During pregnancy, safety has not been established, so it should be used cautiously only when necessary. In breastfeeding cases, the medication should also only be administered when absolutely needed. Safety in pediatrics has not been established, and elderly patients who may have decreased kidney function should be assessed for kidney function before administration and monitored closely during treatment. This medication may cause false-positive results in certain clinical tests. In cases of overdose, symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, and miosis may occur, and treatment may involve administering activated charcoal or gastric lavage. Reports suggest this medication carries a low risk of carcinogenicity or genotoxicity; however, high doses may impose a burden on the liver. The effects of this medication on the fetus during pregnancy are unclear, so it must be used only after consulting a doctor, and caution is necessary as the drug may be excreted into breast milk.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This medication should be stored in a sealed container to prevent exposure to air or moisture. It is important to maintain storage temperatures between 1 degree and 30 degrees Celsius to ensure the longevity of the medication's effectiveness and safety.
