Precautions

This medication should not be used by women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, and by women who are breastfeeding. It is contraindicated in patients with gastrointestinal bleeding, mechanical obstruction, or perforation, as gastrointestinal motility stimulation may be harmful. It should be avoided in patients with certain tumors such as pheochromocytoma, which can cause hypertension. It should not be administered to patients with allergic reactions or intolerance to this drug. It is advisable to avoid its use in patients with epilepsy, manic states, or the manic phase of bipolar disorder. Caution should be exercised in patients with breast-related conditions due to the risk of side effects from increased prolactin secretion. Careful administration is required in hypertensive patients, children, and the elderly, particularly in children where extrapyramidal symptoms may occur, so overdose should be avoided. This medication can cause amenorrhea, excessive milk secretion, and gynecomastia due to hormonal secretion abnormalities, and its use should be immediately discontinued if these symptoms occur. Rarely, neurological side effects such as tremors, abnormal tongue movements, and agitation may occur, and the medication should be discontinued if these symptoms appear. Prolonged use may lead to involuntary movements around the mouth, which can persist even after stopping the drug. Gastrointestinal symptoms such as dry mouth, heartburn, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation may occur. Cardiovascular side effects such as hypertension or arrhythmias may occur, requiring caution. Rarely, a serious condition known as neuroleptic malignant syndrome may occur, characterized by high fever, muscle rigidity, and altered consciousness, necessitating immediate discontinuation and emergency treatment. If a rash or swelling appears, the medication should be stopped, and occasionally symptoms like flushing, malaise, insomnia, drowsiness, dizziness, staggering, impotence, and changes in libido may occur. It is advisable to avoid tasks requiring concentration, such as driving or operating machinery while taking this medication. Interactions may occur when taken with other drugs, particularly anticholinergics, analgesics, digitalis preparations, other benzamide medications, psychiatric drugs, and alcohol. When used with drugs that pose a risk of arrhythmias, close monitoring of the heart condition is necessary. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should avoid this medication for the safety of the fetus and newborn. The elderly should exercise caution due to impaired renal function which may prolong the presence of the drug in the body and adjust the dosage to prevent the possibility of side effects. While this medication is effective in relieving vomiting symptoms, caution is advised in cases of poisoning, intestinal obstruction, or vomiting due to brain tumors, as animal studies have reported a decrease in reproductive function and a potential for tumor development with long-term use.
