This medication is used to prevent seizures and eclamptic seizures due to hypomagnesemia. It also helps prevent uterine contractions and improve electrolyte imbalance, especially in cases of hypomagnesemia. Therefore, it is effectively used for managing these symptoms and conditions.
Dosage
○ Seizures due to hypomagnesemia: Administer 1 to 2 g of magnesium sulfate intravenously (4.05 to 8.1 mmol). ○ Eclamptic seizures: Administer 4 to 5 g of this medication intravenously over 10 minutes (16.2 to 20.25 mmol). ○ Prevention of uterine contractions: Administer an initial dose of 4 g of this medication intravenously (16.2 mmol). Precautions
This medication is provided in glass ampoule form, and there is a risk of glass fragments being mixed in during usage; therefore, extra caution must be taken when cutting the ampoule, especially when used in children or the elderly, to avoid glass fragments. This medication should not be used in patients with poor renal function, patients in a comatose state, patients with high blood magnesium levels, patients with cardiac conduction disorders or atrioventricular blocks, and myasthenia gravis patients. Extra caution is required when using this medication in children with intestinal parasitic diseases or patients with heart diseases. Administration of this medication may cause gastrointestinal side effects such as vomiting or dry mouth, and rarely may cause slowed heart rate or conduction disturbances. Additionally, neurological symptoms such as headache, tremors, or tingling sensations may develop, and with overdose, serious side effects such as hypotension, respiratory distress, and decreased heart rate may occur due to magnesium toxicity. This medication may enhance the effects of other drugs that have central nervous system depressant effects, requiring caution. It may also reduce the absorption of drugs taken concurrently, such as iron supplements or certain antibiotics. It is used to treat eclampsia during pregnancy but can potentially affect the fetus, resulting in decreased muscle tone or respiratory depression; thus, fetal status should be closely monitored, and use should be avoided during labor. The safety of this medication during breastfeeding has not been established; therefore, it is generally not recommended except in special cases. Elderly patients may have reduced physical function, so administration should be done slowly, and dosage should be adjusted cautiously. In cases of overdose, serious symptoms such as cardiac arrhythmias, respiratory depression, and altered consciousness may occur; therefore, in such cases, administration must be stopped immediately, and calcium should be injected intravenously as an antidote. This medication should be slowly infused at a concentration of less than 10% when administered intravenously, and it is advisable not to mix it with certain medications to avoid precipitation. To prevent infection, the injection site and instruments should be thoroughly disinfected, and the medication should be used immediately after opening; any remaining medication should not be reused.
