Treatment of male pattern hair loss
This medication is primarily used to treat male pattern hair loss, specifically androgenetic alopecia, in adult males, especially those between the ages of 18 and 41. Male pattern hair loss refers to hair loss that occurs due to genetic factors and the influence of male hormones. This drug helps slow the progression of hair loss and promotes hair growth. Regular use can improve hair density in balding areas. It is used to restore patients' hair health and effectively improve hair loss symptoms.
Typically, finasteride is administered orally at a dose of 1 mg once daily, with or without food. There is no evidence that increasing the dose enhances efficacy. Generally, treatment effects can be observed after taking the medication for more than 3 months, and continuous use is recommended to maintain the treatment effect. The treatment period and efficacy should be evaluated continuously. If medication is stopped, the treatment effect will dissipate within 12 months.
This medication should not be administered to children or women. Especially pregnant women or women who may become pregnant should not handle broken pieces of this drug as it may be absorbed through the skin and pose a risk to male fetuses. During the use of this medication, depression or mood changes may occur, and if these symptoms appear, immediate consultation with a healthcare professional is necessary. Pregnant women should not take this medication as it may pose a risk of abnormalities to male fetuses' external genitalia. Patients who have an allergy to this drug or are taking other 5α-reductase inhibitors, or have certain genetic problems such as lactose intolerance should not use this medication. Patients with liver function issues need to exercise caution while using this drug. This drug may cause sexual side effects such as decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, and ejaculation disorders, and some patients may experience breast pain or breast enlargement. Long-term use of this drug may slightly increase the risk of high-grade prostate cancer, thus regular check-ups are necessary. There have been no reported significant interactions with other medications, but it is advisable to inform healthcare providers of any other medications being taken. Animal studies during pregnancy have reported reproductive abnormalities in male fetuses, hence pregnant women must never use this drug. This drug is not administered to breastfeeding women, and it is unknown whether it is excreted in breast milk. Safety and efficacy have not been established in children, so it is not used in this population. No special dose adjustments are needed for elderly patients, but the drug's effects have not been established in this group. During the use of this medication, levels of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) may decrease, so caution is needed when interpreting test results. No specific antidote has been established for overdose, and caution is necessary due to limited safety data. This drug should be kept out of the reach of children and should not be transferred to other containers. While long-term use has not shown evidence of carcinogenicity, caution is necessary as reproductive effects have been observed in some animal studies. If changes such as lumps, pain, or discharge occur in the breast during use, inform healthcare providers immediately. Decreased ejaculate volume may occur but typically does not significantly affect sexual function. However, erectile dysfunction or decreased libido may occur. It is essential to have regular check-ups according to the physician's instructions and to consult immediately if any unusual symptoms arise.
