This medication helps in cases of difficulty in expectoration (phlegm) in acute and chronic bronchitis, bronchial asthma, bronchiectasis, and pharyngitis. Additionally, it is used to facilitate the drainage of secretions in chronic sinusitis and fluid drainage in otitis media. Therefore, it is effective for the treatment of respiratory and middle ear-related diseases.

How to take

Adult dose

Adults should take 750 mg of carbocisteine initially, 3 times a day orally, and after symptoms improve, take 500 mg 3 times a day.

Child dose

Children aged 6 to 12 years should take 250 mg of carbocisteine 3 times a day. Children aged 2 to 5 years should take this medication 250 to 500 mg divided into 4 doses daily.

Precautions

This medication should not be taken by patients with ulcers in the stomach or duodenum, those with allergies to this medication or its components, and children under 2 years of age. Caution is necessary in patients with a history of allergic reaction to caramel ingredients when using this medication. Patients with liver or heart problems, those with a past medical history of gastric or duodenal ulcers, pregnant or potentially pregnant women, and breastfeeding women should consult a doctor or pharmacist before taking this medication. It is especially advisable not to take this medication in the first three months of pregnancy, and elderly patients may need to reduce the dosage or use it with caution due to declining bodily functions. If digestive symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal distention, gastrointestinal bleeding, heartburn, loss of appetite, diarrhea, thirst, oral inflammation occur while taking this medication, discontinue immediately and consult a specialist. Also, if symptoms such as rash, red spots, eczema appear, or if there is a headache, nasal inflammation, itching, palpitations, runny nose, or generalized pressure, stop taking it and consult a medical professional. In severe cases, serious side effects such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome, liver dysfunction, jaundice, shock, or anaphylaxis may occur, requiring caution. If cough persists for more than 14 days, a doctor's examination is mandatory. In case of overdose, gastric lavage may be helpful, as gastrointestinal disturbances are the most common side effects. Taking this medication together with antibiotics or syrup containing trimethoprim hydrochloride may change the color or smell of the drugs, so separate administration is recommended. This medication should be stored out of the reach of children, and it should be stored tightly closed in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Additionally, do not transfer the medication to another container from its original packaging to prevent misuse or deterioration of quality.
