Improvement of asthma (bronchodilation, inflammation) symptoms
The combination of a bronchodilator and an inhaled corticosteroid is highly effective in asthma treatment. These medications help open the airways for easier breathing and reduce inflammation to alleviate symptoms. In particular, they assist in improving airway inflammation and constriction in asthma patients. Consistent use decreases the frequency and severity of asthma symptoms and enhances the quality of life. Therefore, the combined use of a bronchodilator and inhaled corticosteroids is widely applied to improve asthma symptoms.
For adults and children aged 12 years and older, the following doses should be inhaled by nebulization twice daily, depending on the severity of the condition: - Salmeterol 50 μg + fluticasone propionate 100 μg - Salmeterol 50 μg + fluticasone propionate 250 μg - Salmeterol 50 μg + fluticasone propionate 500 μg
For children aged 4 to 11 years, salmeterol 50 μg + fluticasone propionate 100 μg should be inhaled by nebulization twice daily. There is no relevant data for usage in children under 4 years old.
This medication takes approximately 10 to 20 minutes to exhibit bronchodilation effects; therefore, it should not be used during sudden asthma attacks or severe exacerbations. Fast-acting inhalers should be used for acute asthma attacks, and patients are advised to always carry such rescue inhalers. This medication is not suitable for the acute management of asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and further evaluation by a physician is needed if symptoms worsen. Patients with hypersensitivity, cardiac arrhythmias, respiratory infections, severe bronchiectasis, or severe asthma conditions should not use this medication. Caution is necessary for patients with cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hyperthyroidism, seizure disorders, pulmonary tuberculosis, or hypokalemia. Particularly, patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease are at higher risk for infections, such as pneumonia, and should seek immediate treatment if symptoms arise, with annual influenza vaccination recommended. If serious side effects occur, such as sudden shortness of breath or worsening wheezing, use should be discontinued immediately, and a doctor should be consulted. Possible side effects include palpitations, headaches, muscle pain, oral candidiasis, hoarseness, skin rashes, etc., and rinsing the mouth thoroughly may help prevent side effects. It should only be used in pregnancy when the effect on the fetus is minimal, and during breastfeeding, as the drug may secret into milk in small amounts, it should be administered at the physician's discretion. Safety and efficacy have not been established for children under 4 years old, and prolonged use at high doses may result in systemic side effects, such as growth delay, so caution is warranted. Elderly patients should be particularly attentive to cardiovascular side effects, and dose adjustments may be necessary. In the case of an overdose, symptoms such as cardiac arrhythmias, hypokalemia, tremors, and headaches may occur, and immediate medical assistance should be sought. The drug must be used for inhalation only, and after use, the mouth should be rinsed to prevent oral infections. Additionally, since this medication may interact with other specific drugs, it is essential to inform healthcare providers of any concurrent medications.
