Improvement of type 2 diabetes (blood glucose control)
This medication is used for the treatment of patients with type 2 diabetes who have inadequate blood glucose control with diet and exercise alone, especially in overweight patients. In adults, this medication can be administered alone or in combination with other oral hypoglycemic agents or insulin. It can also be safely administered to children aged 10 years and above and growing adolescents either as monotherapy or in combination with insulin. This medication effectively aids in blood glucose control and improves diabetes management.
Based on individual drug efficacy and tolerance, the maximum daily dose can be up to 2550 mg. Initially, take 500 mg two to three times a day with meals, gradually increasing the dose by 500 mg weekly. If administering up to 2000 mg, it should be divided into two doses per day, and if exceeding 2000 mg, it should be taken in three doses daily with meals.
Children aged 10 years and older and growing adolescents should take 500 mg once daily with meals or after meals. Measure blood glucose levels after one week to adjust the dosage, with a maximum daily dosage of 2000 mg.
This medication may cause severe lactic acidosis or hypoglycemia, hence it must not be administered particularly to patients with moderate to severe renal impairment or acute cardiac and renal disorders. This medication must be stopped before examinations using iodinated contrast agents and can only be resumed after confirming normal kidney function post-examination. Patients who have had allergic reactions to this medication or similar drugs in the past, type 1 diabetes patients, and those with acute or chronic metabolic acidosis should not receive this medication. Patients with severe infections or serious trauma, before and after surgery, in malnourished states, with liver dysfunction, severe pulmonary dysfunction, or excessive alcohol intake should temporarily discontinue or use this medication with extreme caution. Renal function should be regularly monitored while taking this medication, and it should be immediately discontinued if there is a rapid decline in kidney function or signs of dehydration. Gastrointestinal symptoms (such as diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, etc.) may occur, which are usually transient but may necessitate dosage adjustments or discontinuation in severe cases. This medication can occasionally cause a metallic taste or skin rashes, anemia, vitamin B12 deficiency, abnormal liver functions, and in rare cases, hypoglycemia. Patients should consult a doctor when experiencing unusual symptoms. Care should be taken with vigorous exercise or irregular meals, as there is a risk of lactic acidosis and hypoglycemia when taking other interacting medications. Alcohol can increase the risk of side effects associated with this medication, so excessive drinking should be avoided while on this medication. During pregnancy, it should be used with careful monitoring of the fetal and maternal condition, and during breastfeeding, careful consideration should be given to whether to continue breastfeeding or to discontinue drug therapy, as this medication can be secreted in breast milk. Elderly patients are at increased risk for renal impairment; therefore, dosage adjustments and regular renal function monitoring are necessary. This medication can interact with several other medications. If taking other medications, be sure to inform healthcare providers and carefully monitor blood glucose and physical condition. In cases of overdose, blood dialysis can be used to remove the drug, so if an overdose is suspected, immediate medical attention is required. This medication does not cause weight gain and helps achieve stable blood glucose control and reduce the risk of diabetes complications with long-term use. This medication should be stored out of reach of children and should not be transferred to other containers.
