Relief of bronchial spasms and excessive mucus secretion
Bronchial spasms and excessive mucus secretion occur in diseases such as bronchial asthma, emphysema, and bronchitis. These symptoms can make breathing difficult and cause discomfort. This medication helps to relieve bronchial spasms and reduce mucus secretion, facilitating smoother breathing. Therefore, it is used for bronchial asthma, emphysema, and bronchitis.
Adults and pediatric patients (12 years and older): Administer 20ml per dose, twice a day. After significant improvement of symptoms, the dosage may be reduced to 10ml per dose, 2-3 times a day. Patients with severe dyspnea may take 20ml per dose, three times a day for the first 2-3 days.
Pediatric (under 12 years old): Administer 2.5-15ml per dose, twice a day, depending on age and weight.
This medication must not be administered to patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Careful administration is required for patients with hyperthyroidism, hypertension, heart failure, arrhythmias, diabetes, and severe renal impairment. While using this medication, psychiatric and neurological symptoms such as headache, tremors, muscle rigidity, drowsiness, anxiety, dizziness, irritability, insomnia, agitation, and limb paralysis may occur. Additionally, cardiovascular side effects such as rapid or irregular heart rate or fluctuations in blood pressure may occur. If hypersensitivity reactions such as rash, itching, angioedema, urticaria, bronchial spasms, hypotension, or fainting appear, the administration should be stopped immediately. Other side effects such as liver dysfunction, generalized malaise, edema, and gastrointestinal disturbances may also occur. If this medication is used excessively, irregular heart rhythm or myocardial infarction may occur, so the dosage and administration must be strictly followed. If effects do not appear, it may be inappropriate to use this medication, and administration should be stopped and a consultation with a doctor should be sought. Particularly when administered to children, proper administration methods should be clearly instructed, and the condition should be closely monitored. This medication can lower potassium levels in the blood, which may worsen when used with other medications, so extreme caution is advised for patients with severe asthma. In cases of hypoxia, decreased potassium levels can adversely affect heart rhythms, so periodically checking potassium concentration in the blood is preferable. This medication should not be used in conjunction with catecholamines such as epinephrine or isoproterenol as it increases the risk of cardiac arrhythmias or myocardial infarction. Patients taking MAO inhibitors or tricyclic antidepressants should be especially cautious as this medication's vascular effects may be intensified. This should not be used in conjunction with non-selective beta-blockers such as propranolol. Extreme caution should be taken when administering this medication to patients taking many other sympathomimetics. In animal tests during late pregnancy, it has been reported to cause uterine muscle contraction inhibition leading to delayed delivery. Therefore, pregnant women or those who may become pregnant should carefully consider the necessity and risks of treatment, and extra caution should be taken especially in the first trimester. Elderly patients may have decreased physical function, and caution should be exercised such as reducing the dosage of this medication. Symptoms of overdose usually subside upon discontinuation of the medication, and a cardiac selective beta-blocker can be used as an antidote, but those with a history of bronchial spasms should be more careful. Finally, the dosage of one of the components of this medication, hydrochloride ambroxol, can rarely cause allergic rashes; thus, caution is required as systemic allergic reactions may occur in some individuals with specific reactions.
