This medication is effective against various types of bacteria and is used for treating complicated skin and soft tissue infections, secondary infections in chronic respiratory diseases, acute pyelonephritis and cystitis, gonococcal and non-gonococcal urethritis, and other urogenital infections. It is also effective for bacterial dysentery and gastroenteritis, infections of the female reproductive system such as adnexitis, and ophthalmic infections such as blepharitis and stye. This medication is also applicable for treating various infections such as otitis media, sinusitis, periodontitis, parotitis, cholecystitis, and cholangitis. However, fluoroquinolone antibiotics, including this medication, carry a risk of severe adverse reactions and should be used only when there are no alternative treatments for acute bacterial sinusitis, acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, uncomplicated urinary tract infections, acute otitis media, and complicated skin and soft tissue infections. Patients should fully understand this and use the medication cautiously to effectively treat infections when necessary.

How to take

Adult dose

Typically, for adults, levofloxacin is administered orally at a dose of 100 mg 2-3 times daily. In cases of severe infections or insufficient effect, it may be increased to 200 mg, administered 3 times daily. Dosage adjustments should be made according to age and symptoms.

Precautions

This medication may cause problems such as tendonitis or tendon rupture, peripheral neuropathy, or effects on the central nervous system. If any serious adverse reactions occur, use should be immediately discontinued, and similar class drugs should be avoided. This medication should not be used in patients with myasthenia gravis as it may worsen symptoms. Caution is required for elderly patients, those with poor renal function, and those taking corticosteroids, as the risk of tendon rupture may be increased. This medication can induce seizures, so patients with a history of seizures or central nervous system disorders should use it with caution. Additionally, it should not be administered to those with hypersensitivity to this medication, those who have previously experienced tendonitis or tendon rupture due to it, growing adolescents under 18 years of age, pregnant or breastfeeding women, or patients with epilepsy. This medication can cause various serious side effects, so if symptoms like hypotension, difficulty in breathing, skin rash, psychiatric symptoms, cardiac irregularities, renal or hepatic dysfunction, blood disorders, gastrointestinal issues, muscle pain, or tendon symptoms occur, immediate consultation with a healthcare professional is essential. Also, exposure to strong sunlight or artificial ultraviolet light may cause skin reactions, so caution is advised, and dizziness or drowsiness may occur while driving or operating machinery. Furthermore, it may interact with other medications, so it is important to inform healthcare providers of any other medications being taken, particularly when used in conjunction with antidiabetic agents, anticoagulants, or anti-inflammatory medications. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not use this medication, and breastfeeding should be discontinued if using this medication. Overdose can lead to severe central nervous system symptoms and cardiac issues, necessitating immediate medical attention. This medication has not been proven to be safe for children and growing adolescents. Elderly patients may experience increased medication concentration due to reduced renal function, so dosage adjustments and careful monitoring are warranted. Finally, this medication may affect tendons and joints, so it is vital to rest and consult healthcare professionals if any abnormal symptoms arise.
