Effect of supplying energy by correcting decreased circulating blood volume and interstitial fluid as well as metabolic acidosis.
This medication helps replenish and regulate extracellular fluid when circulating blood volume and interstitial fluid are decreased. It also plays a role in correcting metabolic acidosis to maintain the body's acid-base balance. Additionally, it contributes to providing energy to ensure proper bodily functions. Due to these effects, it is used to improve conditions related to fluid imbalance and metabolic acidosis.
Typically, for adults, 500–1,000mL is administered via slow intravenous infusion. The infusion rate should not exceed 0.5g per kg body weight per hour as dextrose. The dosage and infusion rates may be adjusted appropriately according to age, weight, and symptoms.
This medication contains dextrose, which may rapidly deplete vitamin B1 (thiamine) when administered intravenously; caution is required. Additionally, when used with the antibiotic ceftriaxone, calcium precipitates may form, and the same infusion apparatus should not be used at the same time. Allergic reactions may occur during the administration of this medication, so if symptoms arise, administration must be stopped immediately, and appropriate treatment is needed. Due to the potassium content, patients with poor kidney function or heart disease are at higher risk of hyperkalemia, so blood potassium levels should be monitored frequently. Since it contains dextrose, patients with diabetes or those who have difficulty controlling blood sugar may experience sharp increases in blood sugar levels; therefore, blood sugar levels should be monitored periodically. It contains sodium and chloride components, which may lead to electrolyte imbalance and fluid overload in the body; therefore, caution should be exercised, particularly in patients with heart or liver disease. This medication may cause hyponatremia, so especially in children, the elderly, and post-surgical patients, blood sodium levels need to be closely monitored. Due to the calcium content, it should be avoided in patients with hypercalcemia or a history of calcium kidney stones. There is a risk of pulmonary edema or edema due to excessive fluid supply, so fluid status should be regularly checked during administration. It should not be used in patients with lactic acidosis, excessive fluid status, storage dehydration, hypernatremia, hyperglycemia, newborns, and those with hypersensitivity to any ingredient of this medication. Patients with severely impaired kidney or liver function, congestive heart failure, or hyponatremia should be administered this medication cautiously, and immediate action is necessary if adverse reactions occur. Blood sugar, serum electrolyte levels, and fluid balance should be regularly monitored during administration. When used with other medications, the risk of side effects due to interactions may increase; therefore, it is imperative to inform about the medications being taken together. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, newborns, children, and the elderly require special attention during administration of this medication, and while the container materials may leach out minute amounts of substances, the general risk is low. Before administration, the injection site must be properly disinfected to prevent infection, and the rate of administration should be slow, using the medication immediately after opening and discarding any leftover solution.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This medication should be stored in tightly sealed containers to protect it from air and moisture, in a suitable room temperature between 1 degree and 30 degrees. It can also be safely stored in glass containers or containers made of polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride, and multilayer film plastic.
