This medicine is used to treat and prevent simplex herpes virus infections of the skin and mucous membranes, including primary and recurrent genital herpes. It is also effective in the treatment of herpes zoster virus infections, particularly in alleviating the pain that occurs during the acute phase. However, the effectiveness against postherpetic neuralgia has not yet been conclusively proven. It is used to treat chickenpox in children aged 2 years and older and generally improves various skin diseases caused by viral infections.

Dosage and Administration

This medicine should not be used by individuals who are allergic to this medicine or its components. Care should be taken when using it in patients with impaired kidney function as central nervous system side effects may be more pronounced. Patients with impaired liver function should also be cautious due to the risk of worsening liver function. Special care should be taken when administering this medicine to children and the elderly. Serious allergic reactions such as shock, respiratory distress, and hypotension may occur, and treatment should be stopped immediately and medical attention sought if symptoms appear. If skin rash, fever, hives, or blisters appear, the medication should be discontinued, and medical advice should be sought. Serious dermatological abnormalities such as hair loss, severe dermatitis, and mucosal damage may also occur. Neurological symptoms such as changes in mental status, confusion, hallucinations, seizures, drowsiness, dizziness may occur, especially more frequently in the elderly and patients with reduced kidney function. Kidney function may deteriorate, so any signs of worsening kidney function should be reported to the healthcare provider. Blood-related abnormal symptoms may include bleeding, anemia, and changes in white blood cell counts. Liver function abnormalities or symptoms of jaundice may occur, so regular checks on liver health are necessary. Gastrointestinal symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and if these symptoms are severe, the medication should be discontinued. Overall symptoms such as fever, muscle weakness, headache may occur. Muscle pain or joint pain may also occur, so advise if there is any discomfort. Watch for irregular heartbeats, blood pressure changes, or chest pain. Symptoms of dysuria or urinary obstruction may occur. If symptoms do not improve within a certain period after starting treatment, alternative treatment methods should be considered, and early administration is effective. Patients with compromised immune function may require treatment in intravenous form. Adequate fluid intake is important during administration, especially during high-dose administration to prevent dehydration and kidney damage.
