Treatment of various bacterial infections including respiratory infections and urinary tract infections
This medication is used to treat various infections caused by bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Salmonella, Staphylococcus, and Streptococcus. It is particularly effective against respiratory infections except for acute bronchitis and community-acquired pneumonia. It is also used for treatment of ear, nose, and throat infections, bacterial prostatitis, urinary tract infections, gonococcal cervicitis, and urethritis. It is useful for a wide range of infections including gastrointestinal infections, biliary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and osteoarticular infections. Specifically, this drug is a fluoroquinolone and should be used with caution in specific infections where no alternative therapies are available. Therefore, this medication is used for treating various bacterial infections.
Generally, for adults, Ciprofloxacin is orally administered as 250 to 500 mg once, twice a day between meals. In cases of severe complex infections, the dose may be increased to 750 mg once, twice a day. For acute infections, treatment usually lasts 5 to 10 days, and should continue for at least 3 days after symptoms have disappeared. In patients with kidney impairment, dosage adjustments are required based on creatinine clearance. Adjust as necessary based on symptoms.
This medication may cause severe side effects such as tendonitis, tendon rupture, peripheral neuropathy, and central nervous system adverse reactions. Particularly, patients with myasthenia gravis should not use this medication as symptoms may worsen. If tendon pain or inflammation or nerve abnormality symptoms occur, stop using this medication immediately and consult a physician. This medication should only be used for specific infections and is recommended only when other treatment options are unavailable. Co-administration with corticosteroids should be avoided as it increases the risk of tendon rupture. It should not be used in pregnant or breastfeeding women, children under 18 years of age, patients with a history of hypersensitivity to this medication, patients with severe kidney impairment or history of seizures, elderly patients, and patients with myasthenia gravis should use it cautiously and must consult a physician before use. While taking this medication, immediately inform health personnel if symptoms such as seizures, mental changes, severe diarrhea, skin rash, visual disturbances, etc., occur. Additionally, this medication may interact with several drugs, so inform health personnel if taking any other medications. During the use of this medication, avoid strong sunlight or artificial UV exposure, and if any abnormal symptoms occur, stop taking it immediately. Diabetics requiring blood sugar control should carefully monitor blood sugar changes and receive immediate treatment if hypoglycemic symptoms occur. Elderly patients may have increased blood levels of this medication due to decreased kidney function, so dose adjustments and careful monitoring are necessary. In the case of overdose, kidney function must be closely monitored and necessary emergency measures should be taken. This medication should be stored out of the reach of children.
