Treatment of respiratory (bronchitis, pneumonia) and urinary (cystitis, urethritis) infections
This medication is an antibiotic effective against various bacterial infections, targeting several major pathogens such as Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Streptococcus pneumoniae. It is used for treating respiratory infections such as acute and chronic bronchitis, pneumonia, empyema, and lung abscess, as well as tonsillitis, sinusitis, and otitis media. Additionally, it is effective for urinary infections including cystitis, urethritis, and pyelonephritis, as well as gonorrhea and pelvic infections. It is also utilized for skin and soft tissue infections, boils, abscesses, osteomyelitis, and dental infections. It is a very useful drug for effectively treating a wide range of bacterial infections.
Adults and children 12 years or older or weighing 40 kg or more should take 250 mg/125 mg of amoxicillin/clavulanate potassium three times daily every 8 hours orally. In cases of severe and respiratory infections, the dose may be increased to 500 mg/125 mg per intake. In cases of renal impairment, dosages should be adjusted according to creatinine clearance. For creatinine clearance of 10 to 30 mL/min, amoxicillin is administered as 1 dose of 250 mg.
For children under 12 years or weighing less than 40 kg, the dosage is adjusted similarly.
This medication contains a beta-lactam antibiotic component, so individuals who have experienced severe allergic reactions to this drug or penicillin-related medications should not use it. Patients with concurrent viral infections such as infectious mononucleosis or lymphocytic leukemia are at higher risk for skin rash and should avoid this drug. Patients with liver function issues or a history of liver dysfunction or jaundice caused by this drug should not take it for safety. Patients with impaired liver function may experience further deterioration while using this drug, so caution is needed. Patients with moderate to severe renal impairment may require dosage adjustments due to potentially increased drug concentrations. Individuals with allergic predispositions or symptoms such as bronchial asthma or urticaria should consult a physician before taking this drug. Patients with severe gastrointestinal symptoms such as vomiting or diarrhea, elderly patients with poor nutritional status, or patients on parenteral nutrition should also take this medication cautiously. This medication may cause gastrointestinal side effects such as diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal pain, and in severe cases, complications like pseudomembranous colitis may occur, so immediate medical attention should be sought if symptoms arise. Liver function abnormalities may occur infrequently, especially in elderly patients over 60 and males, necessitating liver function testing and monitoring. Severe allergic reactions such as skin rash, anaphylaxis, and angioedema may occur rarely; if symptoms arise, the drug should be discontinued immediately and medical personnel notified. Blood abnormalities such as leukopenia, anemia, and thrombocytopenia may develop, so it is advisable to have blood tests during prolonged use. Central nervous system adverse reactions such as headache, dizziness, and seizures may occur infrequently, especially in patients with renal impairment or those taking high doses should be monitored. Patients with renal impairment need regular renal function assessments; discontinuation of the drug is required if abnormalities are found. This medication may alter the intestinal bacterial balance, resulting in conditions like candidiasis or stomatitis, so any symptoms should be reported to medical personnel. A tendency for bleeding due to vitamin K deficiency may develop infrequently; thus, patients at risk of bleeding should be cautious. Pregnant women should avoid taking this medication during the first trimester, and breastfeeding women should discontinue use if the baby exhibits diarrhea or allergic reactions. Not recommended for children younger than 12 years or weighing less than 40 kg. Elderly individuals, due to decreased bodily functions, are at higher risk for adverse reactions, and thus dose and administration intervals should be adjusted and used carefully. This drug may interact with other medications, so especially in combinations with anticoagulants, probenecid, allopurinol, etc., consultation with a physician is necessary. In case of overdose, gastrointestinal symptoms, renal dysfunction, or allergic reactions may occur, requiring immediate medical treatment.
