Effective for the treatment of genital herpes, shingles (acute pain), and chickenpox
This medication is used for the treatment and prevention of herpes simplex virus infections of the skin and mucous membranes, including primary and recurrent genital herpes. It also treats varicella-zoster virus infections and is particularly effective in alleviating pain that occurs during the acute phase. In children over 2 years of age, it is also used for the treatment of chickenpox. The injectable form is used for severe genital herpes, recurrent varicella-zoster virus infections, and herpes simplex encephalitis in immunocompetent patients. It is also effective for the treatment and prevention of herpes simplex virus infections, primary and recurrent varicella-zoster virus infections, and herpes simplex encephalitis in immunocompromised patients. This drug is used to improve and treat various symptoms caused by viral infections.
1. Treatment of herpes simplex virus infections: Administer 200 mg five times a day at 4-hour intervals for 5 days; treatment can be extended for severe primary infections. 2. Prevention of herpes simplex infections in immunocompetent patients: Administer 200 mg four times a day at approximately 6-hour intervals or 400 mg twice a day at 12-hour intervals. 3. Prevention of herpes simplex infections in immunocompromised patients: Administer 4 times a day.
1. Treatment of herpes simplex infections and prevention in immunocompromised patients: For children over 2 years, use adult dosage; for children under 2 years, administer 1/2 of adult dosage. 2. Treatment of chickenpox in children over 2 years: 20 mg per kg of body weight.
This medication should not be used in patients who are allergic to this drug or its ingredients or who have hypersensitivity reactions. For patients with poor kidney function, there may be neuropsychiatric adverse reactions when using this medication, so caution is advised. Patients with impaired liver function should be given this medication carefully, as there is a risk of further liver function deterioration. In infants and children, it should only be used at the minimum dose necessary, and particular caution is required in newborns or premature infants, as safety has not been established. Elderly patients are more likely to have decreased kidney function, which can lead to increased blood levels of this drug; therefore, dosage and administration intervals should be adjusted and used cautiously. During the use of this medication, serious allergic reactions such as anaphylactic shock may rarely occur. If symptoms such as low blood pressure, difficulty breathing, or chest tightness appear, use should be immediately discontinued, and medical attention should be sought. Additionally, if hypersensitivity reactions such as skin rashes, fever, blisters, or urticaria occur, the administration of this medication should be stopped, and appropriate treatment should be obtained. Skin-related side effects such as hair loss, erythema multiforme, and severe skin diseases (Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis) may occur, so caution is needed. Neuropsychiatric symptoms may occur, including altered consciousness, disorientation, decreased concentration, aggressive behavior, hallucinations, seizures, drowsiness, insomnia, and anxiety, and these symptoms may be more frequent in the elderly or in patients with impaired kidney function. Kidney-related side effects can include renal failure, hematuria, proteinuria, and pyuria, so it is important to periodically monitor kidney function. Liver dysfunction or symptoms of hepatitis or jaundice may occur, so regular liver function tests should be performed. Gastrointestinal issues such as gastritis, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea may arise; if symptoms worsen, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional. Adequate fluid intake is necessary while using this medication, especially during high doses, to prevent dehydration and reduce the risk of kidney toxicity. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should only use this medication if the benefits outweigh the risks to the fetus, and breastfeeding should be discontinued if using this medication. This medication may interact with other drugs, so it is essential to inform your healthcare provider or pharmacist about any other medications you are currently taking. In case of overdose, symptoms such as mental confusion, seizures, or coma may occur, which can cause kidney damage, so immediate medical assistance should be sought. This medication is most effective when administered as soon as possible, particularly within 3 to 5 days after symptoms begin. When administered intravenously, it should be given slowly via a drip infusion, as rapid administration can damage the kidneys. While using this medication, it is important to carefully monitor for adverse reactions and consult healthcare providers immediately if any abnormal symptoms arise.
